I've never liked coffee but I can remember my grandma giving my brother coffee at like 5 years old. What age do you think itsok for kids to start drinking coffee?

Ummm...high school? Decaf ok in middle school, I guess. But definitely not before then. I don't know why I think that way, though.

Wow, I'm not planning to let me LO drink coffee for a long time! I didn't start until high school, and even then it was mostly frappuccinos. So I'd say high school. Maybe upper middle school.

College. I guess in high school they can buy it with their own money but I won't serve it to them. I don't drink coffee, and I know way too many people who are dependant on it to function in the morning.

Neither of us are coffee drinkers so I never really thought about it. I probably wouldn't let them until they were at least 16.
I think my mom started giving us tea when we were like 4 or maybe even younger. I've been drinking tea daily as far back as I can remember lol.

I never drank coffee till I left college and started working! Before that I would only drink fraps & mochas. They can drink it in HS if they actually like it; as long as they don't drink too much!

We'll prob push tea on our kid(s). My parents were big coffee drinkers and I started in middle school. I think for my LO I'd prob try to make her wait until high school.

I'm in the high school camp too.
I'd let kids drink decaf tea in grade school though.

I always loved the smell, but didn't like the taste until college. I guess high school would be ok.

One of my mom friends was just telling me how babies start drinking coffee around age 2 in her home country. Another friend started drinking it at age 5. She grew up in Chicago. Now she gets a headache if she doesn't have any in the morning.
I don't drink coffee so I say high school or college.

My brother lets his 13 yr old have 1 cup in the morning
Not sure when I will let my kids

I think high school although I see a lot of middle school looking kids hanging out at Starbucks after school around here.

At least high school. I started drinking it during an internship. My parents never drank it at home.

They can have some in high school if it isn't a daily thing.

I didn't drink coffee until college. I'm sure if Starbucks is still around LO will probably have coffee before I did. High school.

Haha, I was 8 years old. It was mostly milk with a little bit of coffee, I insisted I have it because my father was drinking it and I wanted to be just like him.

Oh gosh... I don't think I ever even had an interest in having it for caffeine/morning purposes until college. My mom used to let me have some "coffee milk" as a treat (which basically was as sweet as coffee ice cream and 1/2 milk 1/2 coffee) occasionally.

15/16? like a frozen drink once in awhile. i didn't really start drinking coffee until college and I'm not against it, but I don't think teenagers need it. but if it's not coffee, it'll probably be soda, so....at least coffee is better for you

High school, I'd rather them have a coffee with breakfast than buy one of those nasty sugar-laden energy drinks on the way to school. I've seen students on them that can't handle - not pretty

High School 16+
I remember my grandmother letting me try it when I was 5/6 and I thought it was absolutely disgusting. I let my 2 year old take a sip - I drink coffee black - and of course he loved it! Ugh, a sip was all he got.
He does drink (decaf) herbal teas though.

Ummm, I started drinking it daily at 13!! I worked at a coffee shop starting at 16 though (worked there for years). Maybe it's a Seattle thing but a lot of kids I went to middle school with drank at least fraps. So I would probably let them have it in middle school if they wanted to.

@SweetMamaM: ick. True. Energy drinks are horrible!! I'll never let my kids have them.

Decaf. Toddler age works for me, with lots of milk. Regular stuff, high school...
grapefruit / 4663 posts
We were allowed coffee at like 5-6 its just what my dads family does when they get together. It was milk with sugar and a splash of coffee. I don't see anything wrong with it. As far as everyday it just depends on the child but probably high school.

High school. I think I had fraps in 9th or 10th grade. I didn't actually start enjoying regular coffee until I was halfway through college.

High school. I started drinking coffee daily when I started driving to school in the morning at 16. My parents preferred me to have coffee and be awake for the drive than the alternative!

I think my kids will have to be old enough that they're not really "kids" anymore. (like, 16 or so)

After High School. I feel like it's not a dependency I want to encourage in my kiddos (I drink coffee, my husband does not). I didn't start drinking it regularly until my first "real" job at 22.
i work in a school and I'm surprised at how many kids are dropped off with starbucks frappucinos, lattes, etc. I just feel they are $$ and bad healthwise with all the extra calories.
When I drink coffee, i only drink it with coconut milk these days. Pre MSPI diet, I still rarely if ever bought coffee out and i usually just drank regular drip coffee with cream. No lattes, cappuccinos except on a rare special occasion 9at a cafe with friends).

I didn't like coffee at all until I was in college. I can't imagine a kid being into the taste until at least high school.
On the other hand, in my family kids start drinking tea around three or four (very weak and milky) and I'll probably do the same with my LO.

@looch: my dad used to give me milk with a splash of coffee when I was you too. I also wanted to be like him. I was definitely a daddy's girl!

I had no interest until I was in university (and now I'm a total addict). I'd say high school, but really, I'll never encourage it. It would be pretty damn hard to stop a high-schooler from drinking coffee if they wanted to, though.
