If you had to keep the woodwork as-is, what color would you put on these walls? One of my goals this year is to finally paint all the walls.
If anyone has any inspiration pictures of decorating around woodwork, I'd LOVE to see them

We don't have any permanent furniture yet, we're still actually living with the furniture in the picture >.<
New furniture will happen as soon as we finish our basement (hopefully this year as well!)

@swurlygurl: avoid yellow. Oak has a yellow undertone, so if you go with yellows or a cre youll end up with this gigantic wall blended trim, cabinets and wall color.
I would go with blue, grey or green.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I do like the blues and greys
We went dark blue in our entryway, but I worry that it might be too dark for a living room?

@swurlygurl: it is. If you aren't painting the trim white...?

Sage green!! Specifically Behr Sagey is awesome and came out great against my wood trim.
I'm having a really hard time with colors that go well with the wood too, so I'd love to hear more suggestions. I found blues REALLY hard to pick, most the time it's just much too cool for the warm brown to me. Greys are nice, but so hard to find the perfect tone warm grey. I really like Ben Moore Galveston Grey too.
Will try to remember to find pics when I get home in a bit.

Oak is my personal least favorite color wood, I'd definitely want to paint it or stain it. But if that's not an option, I agree with a gray or blue.

@PawPrints: I agree, I dislike oak... And of course, my entire house is oak. I don't have the patience to paint or stain the trim, so I close my eyes and pretend it's not there. My bedroom set is oak too. I hate it with a firey passion.

I too dislike oak trim, but I'd be inclined to paint it a cool white or blue color to brighten up the room a bit.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: LOL I year ya. I bounce back and forth every other week with "ok, I'm just gonna paint it all" and "omg, it's WAY too much work I'll just deal with it." With the right wall color, I'm learning to love, or at least not mind living with all the oak.

@PurplePumps: we were going to paint it when we put in the new floors then discovered that our trim was stained and has some kind of gloss coating on it. Our trim is decorative with all kinds of grooves, so it would need sanded and so much more work than it's worth. Eff that.
We are moving anyways. Someone else can inherit the 80s wall of doom.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Definitely have to keep it oak-y. DH has a crazy love affair with natural wood. I try really hard to accept it, but every once in a while I get a wild hair and go crazy.
I really like that gray color, but it's shown with white door trim and pretty dark wood - not sure how it'd translate to my yellow wood

We live in an old Victorian house with lots of oak woodwork. We had a designer help us with our paint colors and did lots of light greens, blues, and greys. Of course I have no photos of my house right now. I will look for the paint colors when I get home.

And more of what I have to paint around
@CakeLady: At least it belongs in an old Victorian home! This is just a 90's home with bad varnish that's yellowing everything
I would love to see pictures though!!

I agree with pale blue-gray or green; I think they will help lighten the walls and give a pop of colour against the wood.

Id stain that shit DARK. lol. If you're keeping natural wood, it should at least be pretty natural wood. I love the dark dark trim in old homes.
And I vote pale, sagey green with the oak.

Any of these Behr greeny-bluey-aquas! Our living room and kitchen are painted in Ionic Sky, and I love it.

I'd do something light and cool-toned to brighten up the room: light blue, light green, white, even maybe light gray if you can find the right shade that compliments the wood color. Or stain the wood dark and still go with a nice, light color!

@loveisstrange: I wish
There is so much that we'd spend the rest of our lives working on it
We used these colors in our dining room. I really like the dark purple, but it's definitely too dark for a whole room

@loveisstrange: that first pic is my fave. Huge crush on built-ins!!

@loveisstrange: That's what the trim looks like in my new house! It will be something new to experiment with, decorating-wise.
I vote for a light blue for @swurlygurl: 's house.

We did Valspar Malted Milk in our house with our various trim options. Its a light tan with a yellow undertone.

@swurlygurl: the floors in your entry are beautiful. Is that under your carpet in the living room too? I'd let those bad boys shine.

@swurlygurl: Quietude by Sherwin Williams is a gorgeous green if you're leaning towards green!

I actually LOVE natural woodwork. I would definitely do white, or very light to brighten it up.

I actually think the woodwork is beautiful! Come to my house if you want to see orangey/yellowed woodwork
I think the right sage green (more of a grey undertone, no yellow undertone) would be gorgeous.

@swurlygurl: Staining dark doesn't actually take that long with a gel stain! We had some ugly oak cabinetry in good condition in a bathroom and found that it was surprisingly easy to make it look brand new.

Benjamin Moore Wickham Gray or Halo. They are absolutely beautiful, fail-safe colors that I've used with oak. Can't go wrong with these colors.

Here are a few of the colors I used
Behr Sagey, I couldn't get a good picture at all, it's a little more green, less yellow in person to me
BM Galveston Grey (warm brown/grey)
Behr Slate Pebble (warm grey/purple)
