I received in the mail last night a Pretty Pushers Labor Gown from a girlfriend who wore one during her labor and delivery. She really liked it. Has anyone worn their own type of labor gown, or is anyone planning to do so? What are your thoughts on that?

I did not. I figured that I'm going to bleed, sweat, etc. all over it, so I wanted to do it on something that wasn't mine. I did not get dressed until it was time to go home and it was glorious.

Waste of money. There's a good chance that thing will end up covered in amniotic fluid, blood, and who knows what else. For both my kids I bought really nice nursing gown/robe sets to wear after delivery. But during the actual labor and delivery I didn't want to wear anything of my own.

I got one as a gift. I changed into it after they wiped me down after T was born and before we took a bunch of photos

For my first I wore the hospital gown but I hated it! It was too big for me and really uncomfortable to move around in. For my second I thought about buying a gown but they were so expensive. So I went to the thrift store and got a stretchy black skirt for $4 and cut it to mid-thigh. I wore a black nursing tank from target that I already had. I tossed the skirt after because it was gross but the tank was still good and I just took it home to wash it.

I was able to labor in my yoga pants and a tank top and put on a regular gown when I got into the bed with the epidural

Whatever you wear to labor in is probably going to get gross. Not sure there's much point in having something "pretty". And afterwards I was way more comfortable in yoga pants, tank and hoodie than a gown.

The hospital gown was what worked for me: it could get gross and allowed the nurses and anesthesiologist to do their thing (the opening in the back was especially helpful during the epidural!). I also constantly had to pee before the epidural so it was easy to not have to deal with pants. Once I was pushing I was practically nekkid anyway!
Only downside: if I had wanted walk around or use the birthing ball, maybe the gown would have been annoying. But I preferred the rocking chair and was hooked up to an IV and a monitor anyway.

What a lovely gift! Personally I did not care what I wore haha. I was hooked up and was in bed most of the time anyway. I think if I was supposed to walk around to get things going, maaaybe I would've wanted my own gown...?

I didn't get a crap about what I was wearing. It was going to get nasty so I wouldn't waste my money. I had her at 2:30pm and I couldn't shower till the next morning. I changed gowns when I got to the recovery room but slept in that the first night.

What others said. I'd never have bought one, but it was a thoughtful gift. I'd save it to change into after labor/delivery. Whatever you labor/deliver in is bound to get destroyed, and honestly, whatever you're wearing for the first 12-24 hours afterward has a good chance of getting icky, too, as your body gets rid of um.....everything....it's been holding in for the past 9 months. So it's something you could wear later that is probably cuter than a hospital gown, but is still fairly disposable.
Check with your hospital before you get your heart set on wearing it at any point; they may have regulations.

Nope. I just hung in the hospital one and eventually did wear a nursing tank with a cheap robe that I brought. Wasn't worth wearing anything nice.

Thanks for all these comments! It certainly was a gift and not something I bought for myself. It has cut outs down the front and down the back to accommodate monitoring and epidural and such. I don't think its anything that I will be devastated about getting ruined.

With the birth of my son, I wore the standard hospital issue and I had to be changed afterwards as it had gotten blood on it. I wouldn't want to have to store a blood covered gown for two days and then bring it home to wash it. I do highly recommend bringing comfortable lounge wear (yoga pants, nursing pj's, etc.) for those couple days after delivery while you are still in the hospital (and factor into the equation that you will likely still look 6 months pregnant).

I was gifted one when I was pregnant with LO1. I did not wear it during labor for either birth, but changed into it after I was cleaned up.

Got one as a gift and wore it after I had given birth and had taken a shower. Honestly, I only wore it because I had it and wasn't too impressed with it. Didn't even bring it with DS2

I didn't labor in a gown at all (hospital policy) but I really wish I would have had something nicer than the scratchy gown I was changed into for the next two days!

I totally bought one!! I ordered it off etsy to make sure that it would be here when I was 37 weeks pregnant, then I was induced at 36, so I never wore it. I just figure if I ever had another ill wear it then for after.

I'm currently pregnant with our first, so no experience to share, but I am planning on ordering one or two to labor in... I had a really bad hospital experience 2+ years ago and one of the things that really helped me feel better while I was there was wearing my own clothes. It made me feel normal and in control, instead of gross and exposed in the hospital gowns. I want to feel as much like myself when I'm laboring as possible. Also, if you labor at home in one of those gowns, you won't have to change at the hospital.

Nice gift, but I wouldn't buy one for myself. It got pretty gross, and after labor I switched into normal clothes.

@agold: Not with my son, just the hospital one. I thought the personal gown was stupid.
With my daughter, the gown fell off and I delivered naked, and then nursing in that stupid thing was as good as naked/always exposed and I ended up putting my dress back on--the one that I came in with--it was super low cut and cotton, so great for nursing and pulling aside without having both boobs all over the place. And I just kept it kind of pulled up so I wasn't sitting on it. It didn't get ruined. I would bring that dress all over again. -
For my first I wore a black cotton nightgown, kind of on accident because things just went really quickly at the end. For my second I wore a hospital gown, mostly out of convenience. I changed into the same black nightgown afterwards, though, and it's kinda cool that I got to wear the same thing with both of my babies. Since it was black it didn't stain.

I don't buy the 'it's just going to get soiled' argument - none of my clothing did between two very different labors. I do, however, think a custom gown is a waste of money. I just wore maternity leggings and a soft shirt that I didn't mind getting soiled (they didn't), and then changed into a gown when I needed more access for monitors (the first time) and a sports bra when it was time to get in the birthing tub (the second time).

My cousins wife handmade a custom hospital gown for me. I did not wear it while laboring but with both girls I changed into it immediately after and loved it. I felt a bit more "dressed" and ready for visitors while still keeping easy access for all the checks and nursing in the 24 hours after birth. I was in the hospital for 4 days with both girls and while I didn't wear my gown the entire time, it was so nice to have.

I looked for one but didn't want to spend that much on one. I found a Brobe on a flash sale and I got that. Since I was put on hospital bed rest so early, I forgot I had it. I did wear it a few times when I got home.
Nice present though!

@Bernieboo: I'm glad to hear you are planning to order one. I feel the same way about just wanting to be comfortable. Its not that I'm trying to look cute while laboring. I just want to be as comfortable as possible.
@pastemoo: Okay. Great to know! The one I have also seems like it would be good for nursing. Although, after what most people say here, maybe it will be so nasty that I'll have to take it off after the labor and change into something else.
@mrsrain: That is really nice to wear the same thing. The one I have is black so I'm hoping I can wash it and use for a next pregnancy! I won't have to keep it all nasty with me at the hospital. I'm sure I can beg my mom or sister to take it home with them that first night. I'll even tell them they can take it to my house and use my own washer!!
@sarac: I'm so relieved to hear you say that the clothes you wore didn't get ruined. I don't care about anything getting ruined, but the mental pictures from the descriptions above have me imaging blood and guts everywhere and splashing up on my face and hair!
And this dress thing I received isn't at all custom. Its just from a big chain baby store. @bluestriped bee: I forget, but at how many weeks were you put on hospital bed rest?

@agold: I would say everything got nastier from sweat than from blood and cuts, although my water broke in the hospital bed both times. I just felt gross and didn't want anything I cared about near me. And afterwards was even worse with the bleeding, it was nice to just be able to change into clean everything anytime blood got on something.
I will say after my first I just stayed in the hospital gown the whole time, even though it was really annoying to nurse in, but after my second I changed into loose comfy pajama/ lounge type clothes during the day, then slept in the hospital gown (night sweats were insane!). So I suppose that first day the gown would have been nice.
Also I'm pretty sure once I got out of the tub before my first was born I was just naked, maybe with a towel. Neither DH or I can remember what I was wearing when I actually delivered!

@Foodnerd81: Ahhh.. okay. Sweat makes sense. That's a little nicer to imagine than what I was actually picturing in my head. I plan to bring a few nursing pajama type things, too, so I will have plenty to change into. I really hate feeling nasty. One of my biggest "phobias" is having to walk or sit around with wet clothing.
I will never go on splash mountain at disneyland because if my jeans got wet and I had to walk around I would likely die. So yea. I expect to change a lot and I also expect to have to adjust my expectations when the actual event arrives!! -
I would never buy one, but if someone gave it to you, why not?! I wore a hospital gown my entire stay both deliveries. I didn't want to mess up my "reAl clothing".

I loved having my own clothes on during labor and after - just made me feel more in control of things. Because of a long series of events, I ended up inadvertently laboring in a tee shirt of my favorite bands. It wasn't ruined, and I still wear it all the time. I never wore a hospital gown (I HATE them), and had bought myself a nice brand new robe to wear with yoga pants and nursing tanks, which I loved having. If I could go back, I would definitely get a personal labor gown, but I'm particular about clothing.

I bought one of those. I used it during labor. It was a stupid purchase. I did not care at ALL what I was wearing during labor. A hospital gown would have been just fine.

I just wore the hospital gown. I brought yoga pants and a sweatshirt to the hospital with me to change into after the birth, but honestly I didn't want to wear pants until the day we left the hospital, what with the huge ice pack thing and enormous pads they give you. I didn't think about buying a labor gown but if someone had given me one, I probably would have waited to wear it until after she had arrived so it wouldn't get nasty. I might bring a robe or something next time to just put over the hospital gown.

I never even thought to save the labor gown until after labor. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I see nothing so special about a generic $40 black dress with labor-inspired cut outs that I would "save" it for anything other than labor. Its specifically a labor dress - not anything that can be worn reasonably for any other occasion. I am so surprised that more people haven't used one since I see them on instagram and whatnot. But I will certainly report back if I end up getting to wear it for my own labor and let you all know how it worked out!

@agold: I recommend a robe. I walked the halls for hours this most recent labor and was happy I had a coverup. I also wore it post delivery on my walks.

@agold: i'd rather just wear the hospital one and not have to deal with the clean up. Only after labor would I wear my own gown. Last time I stayed in the hospital gowns they provide but wore my own gown on top of it when I went to the nursery

@Alba4: I just bought some nursing pjs that come with a robe. The labor dress i got covers all the essential spots and I would probably be okay walking around in it. But are you thinking it is cold, and that's why you suggest a robe?

I wore the gross gown and bled all over it until I went home. I thought I'd change into my own clothes but was too sore. I looked great

@Mrs. Champagne: Ha! Your comment and the faces after it made me laugh. Maybe I'm feeling too optimistic about labor and delivery. So funny. I'm totally wearing this gifted dress and now expecting to throw it away asap. =)
