@sslm: This probably isn't very helpful as I haven't tried it yet, I've been wanting to go to philly and eat at Laurel ever since Nick Elmi won his Top Chef season. His gnocchi dish got rave reviews both on the show and by real life diners.

This isn't SUPER close to Rittenhouse, but you cannot go wrong with any of the restaurants on 13th St (bw Locust and Chestnut). 2 women have opened several restaurants, and they're all hits. My favorite is Barbuzzo - their Budino dessert might be best thing I've ever eaten. Seriously.

Another of my favorites was Entree, at 16th and South. Again, not really Rittenhouse Square, but it was SO yummy. And a BYOB. I see you don't like duck, but their duck entree was incredible.

We never got to try it before we moved, but I'd heard great things about Dandelion, especially if you're a craft beer fan.

I had the best meal ever at Rose Tattoo Cafe.

Also check out Reading Terminal Market! It's a giant indoor food market, they have some of Philly's most notable food offerings!

@buttermilk: I definitely recommend hitting up Reading Terminal Market and seeing what pleases you.
DH and i just had THE BEST meal at Vernick food and drink. It could be tough to get reservations. They have some eclectic things but their chicken dish is amaaazing.
Melograno is decent italian in that location. I also like Audrey Claire. Talula's garden is also great if you like cheese, but it's down on Washington Sq park. SOOOO many great places to choose from.

DH and I love Barbuzzo (Mediterranean/tapas style) - their food is amazing! We also really like Amis as well!

I love barbuzzo too. They have this Sheeps milk ricotta appetizer that is divine. Vernick is awesome too. I've only been to these places for lunch though.
