I have a phone interview next week for a position that is a promotion from what I currently do and pays a lot more than I make now. I've never had a phone interview before. Please give me some pointers!
I really really want to get this job because they also have great childcare on the premises.

SMILE!!! If you have to do your interview in front of a mirror so that you remember do it. It sounds strange....but its the best advice I can give.
Act as though you are there in person. Dress up and be prepared just like if you got called in.
Have your resume in front of you so that you can talk about it fluidly without stumbling. In every phone interview I was asked to walk them through my resume. I found it also helped me to make notes on it that were not on there so that I could remember what I wanted to say.
But above all else...SMILE!

I would say be conscious of your words. You are probably thinking, well duh! That's all they have to go by. But a huge pet peeve of mine is when people say "umm" or "uhh" a lot. I think on the phone we tend to be more relaxed too, so just be conscious of that! If you need time to think, just pause for a few seconds, think, and then talk. It really doesn't sound weird at all, but you will sound more intelligent and put together.

I have to conduct phone interviews from time to time.
Speak clearly and carry an upbeat voice inflection. I end interviews pretty quickly if someone has a dull and monotone voice.
Try to be at home for the call so and eliminate any background noise...babies, pets, laundry machine, dishwasher, cell, family members. This drives me crazy.
Don't multi task...I can't stand it when I hear someone typing in the background.
Ask a lot of questions, do your research about the company.
Take turns speaking, I hate being interrupted during an interview.
Have your resume ready and know how to play up your work experience, education and accomplishments!
Remind the interviewer that you would love to come in for an in person interview and thank them for their time!

@MrsBrewer: I have a tendency to laugh when nervous so I need to be very aware. I might post a piece of paper that says don't laugh in the room with me.
@autumnlove: Very helpful. I won't type! I will be home for the interview but so will LO who is 2 months. I might ask my husband to take her out for a walk during the interview.
