I love my f1.8 50mm lens, it won't be that expensive so there may be a better option

@NurseMommy: I second the f1.8 50 mm if you're just starting out. I shoot video with DSLR, so my priorities are a bit different, but regardless of photo/video, I think it's an excellent fixed lens to start out with. It's not great for tight spaces because it's a tight shot, but it's fantastic if you have some room to move around. It's great in low light settings.

I use Canon, but there is another lens that is 3x the price, a f1.4 50 mm. It's even better in low light situations, is a bit sharper.... it's actually on my list of lenses to buy, eventually. I'm planning on replacing my 1.8 with it.

I also have a Rokinon 14 mm f2.8 in that price range that I like a lot, but it's a manual focus (if that matters to you). It's a wide angle lens, and you can get some really impressive shots with it. The glass on it is amazing for the price, and it comes in a version that's compatible with Nikon, too.

I would buy something that has a wide aperture. Generally you can get more bang for your buck with a fixed lens. I find that the 50mm is a bit too zoomed in for indoors (where I am always wanting for extra stops) but it works great outdoors (where you generally have enough light). It is a very budget friendly lens if you get the 1.8 version though.

Between the two, I would go for the 35mm! What is the max aperture of that one? 1.8?

@sunny: @NurseMommy: I want a 35mm so badly! I feel like that would be a great focal length for indoors.

I want all the lenses, haha. I wish they weren't so $$!

@Pepper: @NurseMommy: I just checked my amazon account, I agree with the 35 suggestion. I had the 50 and returned it for the 35 bc I had to get too far away with the 50 so taking pictures indoor was hard! sorry I was thinking it was the other way!

@NurseMommy: sorry! neither in labor nor sleeping... just hadn't been online yet I don't know Nikon lenses because I shoot canon, but I always prefer a prime lens to a zoom lens because they tend to be faster and better quality at a lower price. And I think the camera you have is a cropped sensor one, so a 35mm would be a great choice!!

Just wanted to chime in to say that the 35 is a great choice.

Get a 50!!!!

@NurseMommy: as Mae said it is a cropped sensor, that's why I liked the 35 over the 50 if you google reviews you can see the difference with the cropped sensor so the 35 is great
