We are visiting my inlaws in October. They live on Pensacola Beach but I would like to branch out and see what else is in the area. Pensacola doesn't offer much of a downtown/boardwalk/fun walking area.
Does anyone know of places nearby that might be fun to visit?

Destin FL is about 45 mins away and has nice shopping/restaurants.
Fairhope,AL is about an hour away and an adorable town with things to do downtown.
It will still be warm enough to go to the beach, at least 80ish .
It really depends on the age of people going on the vacation for fun stuff to do.

Destin FL has an awesome outlet mall if you want to shop!
Also, the National Aviation Museum is in Pensacola - the Blue Angels (a stunt fighter jet team) practice there and you can watch for free. It's loud, so ear plugs aren't a bad idea. But super cool.

Destin and Fort Walton Beach are both beautiful! Not a bad drive either.

We live on NAS Pensacola and unfortunately due to budget cuts the Blue Angels are no longer having weekly stunt practice for the public, but downtown Pensacola has a lot of wonderful restaurants and Gulf Shores, AL is about 30 min away and has quite a bit to do.

@mrs.lord: probably just us and our 13 month old. His parents aren't really the "do stuff" type of people.

I agree with @mrs.lord: about Fairhope if you have the time. I always try to go for the day when I'm home.

FIL lives in Destin and we always end up spending time at the outlet mall and the commons. There's a Build-a-Bear workshop at the commons. That might be something fun to do with your LO? We never seem to end up with one close by so it's definitely fun for us (even before kids!).
