I put small toys inside plastic eggs - happy meal type toys, matchbox cars. The other hit for us was a magna doodle. And snacks. Lots and lots of snacks.

@littlejoy: You can bring pouches, we had no problem with them. How long is your flight?

@littlejoy: If they're over the liquid carry on size (the 3+ whatever oz) they will open them up to do some kind of test, so plan accordingly. We had a few in our carryon and one was 4.5 oz so they opened it for testing, so LO had a fruit/oatmeal pouch for dinner, ha!

ETA: We have been on 9 planes with LO in the past 2 months (ugh) and some of the airports have kids play areas, look for them because they are worth their weight in gold! I'm sure they're kinda gross but airports just are and LO loved watching the big kids and having somewhere to cruise (she's 10.5 mo now).

@littlejoy: I did little "gifts" for each 30 min increment. So each 30 mins she got to open something new. Target $1spot was great for these - they also have great activity packets.

I also did the ipad and had an arsenal of shows for her to watch.

You could do the Color Magic stuff as opposed to crayons to avoid the mess? Books, small puzzles, and as many stickers as you can pack. That was my lifesaver...

I had little pre-planned snacks too - all of her favorites so it was a super fun experience.

I brought books and some toys for DS, but guess what he found the most intriguing and captivated his attention for 30 minutes?? The darn barf bag!!! I can't remember what he kept putting in and out of the bag, but it kept him occupied for 30 freaking minutes. Go figure. lol

@MenagerieMama: Really? We walked through security 4 times with a hoard of 6 oz pouches and no one even gave them a glance.

@littlejoy: I bought DD these bc she is in a HUGE minnie mouse place and given she is not accustomed to headphones I thought the minnie mouse thing may appeal. She wore them 50% - the other time she just watched. I have found sound is kind of optional for her - she can do just fine with only the video.

I have found with airport security the best approach is obviously 1) be nice and 2) be open and upfront about what you have. They seem to take much easier to things when you point them out as opposed to when they find them.

I always put DDs stuff in a gallon plastic bag I could pull out easy so they could see/assess. They have never opened her food containers.

@Mrs D: @Mrs. Carrot: Gah, I must have had a super anal TSA agent then. I had them in a clear ziploc and pulled them all out and was super nice! Ha. I hate the inconsistencies, I have flown with a tiny pocket knife on my keys for the past 4 years and the most recent flight I flew they confiscated them in security. Oh well!
