Anyone have experience with the play food from either brand? Any recommendations? LO is getting a kitchen for his 2nd birthday and I'm overwhelmed by all the food possibilities!

I'm sure both are great! We have a couple of the M&D sets though. Food groups, place n bake cookies and sandwich set.

Both are great! I like learning resources for bulk food, Melissa and Doug for specific things like cutting fruit.

@mediagirl: I was just looking at the M&D cutting stuff. I think he will definitely like that!

I don't know if I have any LR stuff because all if not most of our play food are second hand. But we do have M&D and love those. But do chip over time and hurt when your toddler throws it at you! LOL
I also like the felt foods from IKEA.
The cutting / slicing are great at this age!

I second Ikea felt food. Easy to store and clean and won't break the TV when it's thrown around.

The LR food are really good quality; they are higher quality and more realistic than a couple of other brands we bought. Don't have any M&D food, but that's a great brand in general.

@locavore_mama: That's my biggest fear! Don't need bruises from flying bananas

The paint on the MD stuff chips pretty easily. It's left streaks on my walls, even.

@SeptMomma12: haha I mean the M&D stuff is SOLID wood. So yeah, it hurts. LOL Thankfully it's only happened once or twice.

We just got a set of Learning Resources and it's great. I didn't want to deal with the M&D food chipping.

@locavore_mama: @SeptMomma12: I've gotten some legit bruises from flying wooden blocks, so yeah, I think we are avoiding wooden food too lol! may get one or two "cutting" sets though.

@SeptMomma12: I know! I fell down the rabbit hole looking at all the different options last week, trying to prep for Christmas list requests.
We went with this set to start: http://amzn.to/1A7TSXI
So far we really like it and even my mom commented on the quality.
I will say, we're usually pretty loosey-goosey with age recommendations. C is 18 months and this set is for ages 3 and up. We did have an incident where she had one of the cucumber slices jammed in her mouth that required DH to retrieve it, but we remedied that risk by just putting the cucumbers away until she's older. They're the only truly "small" piece (IMO) in the set.

@SugarplumsMom: coffee spit take, that was awesome! I can definitely relate, so many near misses with the tv lately!

@jessibear: SO cute! Are they like a hard plastic?
We have SO much play food that DH might murder me if I buy more. I got this humongous lot from a local mom for $40!
I really want to get her a coffee maker. If it's on a Christmas list and someone else buys it...it doesn't count. Right?

@locavore_mama: they're not hard plastic. Sort of a stiff rubber texture of that makes sense. For instance, you can squeeze the chicken, it's flexible and hollow, with a hole in the end sort of like a dog squeak toy. Horrible description, it's just a different feel/material.

We love the Ikea felt food and empty containers from real groceries. When she's older, we might consider wooden food, but for now (20 months), it's nice not to have to worry about dents and dings on us or the house.

@SeptMomma12: we have lots of play food but I must say the fruits and veggies from M&D are amazing - they are plastic and so realistic looking!!! And true to size!

Thanks ladies! This is all super helpful. Hard to believe play food choices can be stressful
I think we are going to try a little of each but stay away from the wood stuff...for my safety!

We got a big giant set of LR food from Costco. I like it and I'm glad we don't have to deal with chipping paint.
