We are renovating a house, and we are starting from scratch in the master closet. It's a good-sized closet that DH and I will share. We looked at the container store, which was great except the price. IKEA seems to have similar products but much cheaper. I'm also looking at lowes and Menards. Have you used any of these? What would you recommend? If you were designing a closet, is there anything special you would do?

Def look at what's in your closet now and what you wish you'd have for them! Our contractor did our closet, I loved that he put in a high bar for dresses! And tons of pull out drawers to contain messes haha!

We went with a local closet installer - he drew up plans based on what I wanted - lots of shoe storage, drawers, and racks for long dresses.

If I could splurge on it, I'd have my closet designed by a closet installer. The previous owners used a system from Home Depot/Lowe's and it's very inefficient.

We use ELFA systems in our closets and love it! The Container Store has a new upscale line of closets that is beautiful!

Elfa is my personal favorite and annually between Dec-Feb they go on sale for both the system and installation.
We looked into local closet installers, the ones that advertise in home mags as well. What I wasn't keen on was how dark our closet would be with solid wood all over it. The price waso comparable to Elfa. As much as I like Ikea's Pax system it can become dark just like the local ones. I think the Closet Factory is a franchise, but that's one vendor that gave us a quote.

My parents made sure to leave room for a dresser and a mirror in their walk in closet. It looks great! Also it breaks it up so not every wall is built ins. I believe they also did not have it go all the way to the floor because they wanted to be able to vacuume and if flooding happened they didn't want the wood to absorb moisture

I have a regular closet, but used Elf products from the container store, and I love it! I think the price is pretty reasonable considering how sturdy the products are.
