DD (almost 4) has been potty trained for about a year and a half and hasn't had issues. Lately she has been having several pee accidents a week and today she had a big poop accident. We haven't had any major life changes and DS is 18m so it isn't new baby regression. I'm just wondering at what point accidents become reason for concern. Her 4y checkup is in early April, should we just wait it out until then or do we need to do something now. Just curious and needing to vent.

@mrbee: she was the the sitter's waiting for her to get my son's jacket on so they could go out. She went to get in the car and the sitter noticed her pants were wet thought it was a pee accident but when she got her into the bathroom it was diarrhea but with some formed poop. She had apparently pooped while downstairs playing and didn't say anything, she had been sitting in it for a little while possibly. When I try to get her to tell me what happened she says she pooped.

@purrpletulips: If poop accidents become regular, it could be due to encopresis (a fancy name for poop accidents). Encopresis can also cause a child to wet their pants.

I wrote a bit about encopresis here... it's often caused by "functional constipation," another fancy word which basically means a phobia of pooping which results from the child holding in poop until the rectum can no longer realize that there's poop waiting to come out and then the poop just comes out on its own:

Alternatively, daytime accidents could be from an UTI... but the combination of both accidents after potty training is a bit suggestive of functional constipation.

@mrbee: I took DD to the doctor this morning to rule out a UTI and while she was clear for that the doctor suggested she might have mild/the start of encopresis. Your information helped me at least have a small understanding of what that is. Thank you.

That book I linked to has a course of treatment that worked wonders for my son... it's a cheap book, well worth the ten bucks or so!
