We potty trained DS at 2.25 and it went really well. I really really hated it, but it went fine . We did it in the winter and I hated being stuck in the house and worrying about him peeing and pooping all over.
We are debating training my almost 2 year old DD this weekend, but IDK if I'm up for it. I want it over, but she's way more stubborn than he was.
I would not train at night. Waking kids up to potty sounds like to craziest thing in the world to me. We kept DS in diapers or pull ups until he was consistently dry and it was no big deal.
The one thing I'll do differently this time is no pull ups except at night. Last time we got lazy and once he realized he could pee in them with no consequence they were treated exactly like a diaper.

@looch: @Adira: @wrkbrk: I was told the same by my Ped about the enzyme. She said there’s literally nothing you can do to train them overnight. You can wake them up but it doesn’t actually teach them anything, it just helps your laundry situation.

@ShootingStar: Totally agree with you. Pull ups at night only. I first worried it would confuse him but my ped said, no, they learn immediately that they get them with pjs but not with clothes, etc. We are going for it now in part because it's summer.........

Although we didn’t train her LO never peed her diaper at night after about six months old. I think it is because we took her to pee every single morning. We wouldn’t lounge around too long after waking on almost all days. It was up and at em first thing, like adults.

O is 2y and just about 8 months. We knew the 3 or 5 day method wasn't for her, as she resists and becomes defiant if she feels pressured about anything, no matter how much we talk it up. We did use pull ups for a while and called them big girl diapers, and took her to the potty as much as possible without putting pressure on her. After a month or two she was dry and successfully using the potty maybe 90% of the time and we switched to underwear (she insisted on buying Elmo underwear at the store one day). She was instantly 100% with pee but took another 2 weeks or so to figure out poop. We threw away a lot of underwear! But we started putting her on the potty with some books or her tablet about 10 min after every meal and she figured out pooping on her own that way. She really just needed something to distract her enough to sit still. When we got baby N when O was exactly 2.5 she regressed a little and had some pee accidents maybe 2-3 times a week, but we had also gotten lazy about taking her often enough. We got a sticker chart and started taking her every hour or so and haven't had a pee accident since. She only naps an hour some days so we never thought to put a pull up on for naps and she's never had a problem. We haven't even considered night training as we believe it isn't possible because of that enzyme and pull ups are so easy and also she was the world's worst sleeper so you couldn't pay me enough to disturb her sleep. She wakes up dry maybe once or twice a week, so I know she'll get there and I'm good with pull ups until they're consistently dry.

@2PeasinaPod: It sounds like waiting was DEFINITELY the right thing for your son! I tell myself if it all goes to crap (no pun intended) we can just stop and try later ...

@Mrs. Turtle: Ha! Couldnt pay me is right. I think it probably doesnt make sense to wake them to pee despite the book's advice ... thanks for sharing! DS is oddly not motivated by underwear so I am hoping just not giving him a choice (we dont have diapers at home anymore!) will work. Lol. Poop I think I am repressing the idea of ...

We did this last 4th of July when LO was 26 mos. We skipped bottomless for more-or-less the same reasons @DESERTDREAMS88 mentioned.
Even a year later, the time between "I need to pee" and "oops" is only about 15 minutes. When we're at home or spending a long time in a familiar place, we leave it to LO to self-initiate other than first thing in the morning and before bed. There are conditions were we prompt: We always make a trip to the loo before getting in the car (even if he just went 30 minutes ago), and every 90 minutes while we're on a long drive or while out-and-about in an unfamiliar place.
We started off using pullups for nap and overnight. We dropped pullups for nap really early since he was almost always dry. We kept using pullups for 6-7mos overnight -- he spent a really long time being dry 9 times out of 10 without any apparent progress. Eventually, he just said he didn't want to wear pullups at night, so we stopped. In the last 5-6 mos we've only had 3 nighttime accidents.

Oh, and after the long weekend we were in good enough shape to send him to daycare. He had an accident almost every day for the first two weeks back at daycare (but also used the loo successfully 3-4 times each day) and then things improved dramatically from there.

@wrkbrk: yeah I really think the author knows what she's talking about with the between 2 and 3 to train.
We also never woke him up once to pee in the middle of the night for what that's worth. Ain't no way I was going to be waking a sleeping baby up to pee.

@wrkbrk: Yeah, the poop in underwear was unfortunate. It was about once a day for a couple weeks. We thought about washing them and decided it wasn't worth it, wouldn't go on forever, and underwear are cheap! So we tossed one pair a day for a little while. I have to say, someone here suggested the idea of "catching" the poop timing by doing it 10 min after meals and it was a lifesaver. We actually went one step further and had her run around after the meal for 10 min to get things moving. Worked like a charm, and now she requests "poopin time" so she can sit and try for a bit. Also, all the rewards. We have used "special candy" (fruit snacks) as well as special cereal, cookies, stickers, dollar store toys, etc. Anything that will keep her motivated and keep the experience positive. Our girl is not one you want to butt heads with about anything. Positive reinforcement (or bribes) work so much better.

@Mrs. Turtle: Oh wow it only takes approximately ten minutes?? I have to say, I dont know my DS's poop schedule at all. I guess I will learn it! LOL!
blogger / pear / 1509 posts
@wrkbrk: I think that's just the optimum time for it to happen, not necessarily that that meal is going through that fast. Either way, it worked for us! She didn't really have a super regular schedule, and really still doesn't, but doing it that way helped her figure out what it feels like and how to do it on the potty!

@Mrs. Turtle: Very smart. Thanks for the tip! The thing he prizes more than anything else is youtube videos where other toddlers play with matchbox cars (....) so maybe we will have to save those for poop time! I call it baby trashy reality tv!

@wrkbrk: I wanted to second all of Mrs. Turtle's thoughts/suggestions on pooping and add a couple things. Before potty training, my daughter pooped 2-3 times a day. Now it's once a day, and usually in the morning. So we make it a part of our daily routine to sit her on the potty for a while and just leave her to do her thing. I'll leave her there with the door open while I'm getting her little sister dressed and packing my lunch, etc. She knows to yell for me when she's done and she's so proud to show me her poop lol. Sometimes she's more resistant and we have to bribe (we always do food that she doesn't get often - chocolate milk, fruit snacks, or she's super into pretzels right now...). Sometimes it takes 5 minutes, sometimes 25. But she goes during that time 95% of the time. So even if your kid doesn't have a schedule now or if you don't know his schedule, I bet he'll get on one after a week or two of training.

@lilyofthewest: How sweet of you to check on us! It’s going! Four times peeing on the little potty, no accidents yet. 🤞 But diapers for nap and night we decided. He’s running around with no bottoms and is proud of himself so far! Let’s hope the newness doesn’t wear off cause I’m hoping by Monday he can go sans diapers to daycare!

@kayla0416: Just seeing this somehow. Thank you! I hope we can* find a schedule or pattern. No poop this first day...

@wrkbrk: we had no poop the first day either. And we could tell the next day that she really had to go because she kept running to the bathroom, then would jump right off the toilet as soon as she sat down. Until DH let her put loose shorts on while I nursed the baby, and we had that one turd on the floor. But after that she got it. It’s just a weird feeling.

@Foodnerd81: Hahahaha oh turds on the floor. What is our life? My plan is to bribe him to sit and wait for poop on the potty with a video!

@wrkbrk: I literally came out of my bedroom from nursing and said “why does it smell like shit in here??” (Ok, not my finest parenting moment since both kids could hear me, but also, not my worst).
