I have my scheduled c-section tomorrow and I was told that I am not allowed to eat anything past midnight tonight. Does anyone know if that includes Tums?! I might not survive the night if I can't have Tums. And no water! Ugh...

No water?!?? Eeeek, my pre-op is tomorrow...I'm sure I'll be in the same boat with the restrictions.
Good luck!

@autumnlove: I was surprised when they said no water. I am going to be so thirsty. I always drink so much water at night because that is when I seem the most thirsty. Oh well, it's not like I will sleep anyways. Good luck tomorrow and on Thursday (that's when your scheduled for, right?).

I would say yes to tums. You aren't even having general anesthesia...I do think hospitals are overbearing with their "NPO" orders.(nothing by mouth). BTW, I'm a nurse practitioner

They don't want you to have anything. Tums will prob be a no no. I would call just encase. I'd hate for you to have to go through all that and find out you could of had them.

I'm sure you shouldn't, but my water broke unexpectedly and I needed a c-section that night. I had eaten a delicious dinner of turkey three bean chili and corn bread (I'll never forget that because I was terrified I would see it again, I didn't!) for dinner not three hours before I had my c-section. So, they can do it! It's not like they waited 12 hours for mine

@ChitownRo: Yup, what you said.
I would say that you'll be okay with Tums early in the night. (If you are needing more than one or two, you might need to look into something longer acting anyway!)
The reason why they do this is because if they have to put a tube in your throat to help you breath (i.e. all the way under), then you cannot protect your airway anymore and can get stomach contents in your lungs. But...you're having spinal anesthesia most likely. Which means you'll be awake. Which means you can protect your own airway.
Short answer, is that it is all a liability thing. Easier to tell everyone "nothing to eat after midnight" in the off chance that you require emergency intubation. Because of that, I would always let someone know if you have anything more. Some anesthesiologists will flip out if the patient chews gum the morning of surgery, even if they spit it out.
