Some close friends just announced they are pregnant and I would love to send a little gift.
They will be finding out the sex but obviously not until 16 weeks or so.
Should I go with
- A gift for mom (not sure what this would be though)
- A planning gift such as the Baby Bargains Book
- Neutral baby gift - (A+A swaddle, small toy, first book)?
Other suggestions?

When I told one of my best friends I was expecting, she sent me a little care package that I thought was soooooooo sweet. It included neutral bibs, onesies, and a cute little teether. Plus a card! It was so sweet!

@Thehistoryofus: That's such a sweet idea! I am betting she would love a card with a sweet sentiment, a book to prepare and maybe a fun neutral baby item that will just get her excited!!

That's such a cute idea! What if you did something like belly cream for the mom, the Baby Bargain book (perhaps with some things highlight that you couldn't life without!), and a cute onsie or bib?
Or even those patches that say "1 month" "2 month" that you put on the onsies to take monthly pictures of the baby. I've seen those on babysteals. I know they make them for weeks of pregnancy too.

I like the idea of a gift for mom at the early stage. I got a few really beautiful gifts from close friends, like expensive belly oils that I probably never would have bought, spa GCs etc. and I really appreciated them!

How far along is she now? I get nervous about buying anything for the baby before the 2nd trimester, so when my SIL told me early on, I sent her stuff for her, like nice belly cream (Mama Mio) and a GC to Destination Maternity for later on. I would send the baby stuff later, but I'm just too superstitious or nervous or something. Plus I figure there is loads of time for people to give her baby stuff, it's nice to pamper mom now.

I'm a book lover, so I loved receiving baby books (since it doesn't matter what the baby's gender is). I thought the Baby Bargains book was also SUPER helpful.
If you wanted to get her a gift for mom, you could get her something to relax like a gift cert. to a nail salon/spa or something.

For one friend, I bought a pair of girl booties and a pair of boy booties, plus a toy (they have a pet bird so I got him a bird toy).
For another friend, I got her a horse toy (she has horses), and a boy hat and a girl hat.
