Hi,
I recently got a quote to paint a 10x12 bedroom in our house and they said $400. I was a bit shocked - this doesn't include the paint but did include the ceiling. Anyone know a reasonable cost? I was thinking $200. TIA? I live in NJ, btw.

That seems high. We got our entire bungalow painted (3 bedrooms, kitchen, large family room) for $1,100 plus paint.
ETA: plus two bathrooms and the dining nook too.

I'm also in NJ and that's on the low end of quotes we've received recently. I couldn't even get a handyman to paint a room with limited prep work for less than $350.

All of my painting quotes were wicked high - like $1,500 for 2-3 bedrooms? I just ended up doing it myself for that reason.

@Mama Ek: Was this a company? I found companies charge higher than if you were to find someone who does painting on the side. Our house is new construction so, we got one of the guys to do side projects for us. He's super cheap, but it's also straight through him and we pay him in cash.

The problem with just paying for 1 room is that they still have the overhead to come all the way out to your house, set up, etc. My husband used to charge a $500/day minimum for concrete work (even if it was something small like a mailbox that would only take a few hours). It just wasn't worth gas and stuff for much less than that. Do you have any other rooms you are considering getting painted? I would venture to guess you might be able to see if he could do like 2 rooms for $500.

Thanks everybody! I thought this was a "handyman" but when he came in he handed me his business card. I did ask about two rooms and he said $400 each.
@T.H.O.U - I see the reasoning for the min. per day. We asked him for a bunch of other stuff too so maybe he was just trying to get the job to $2K or what he thought it was worth....

I look at a lot of painting quotes for work and here it's about $700-$1,000 per room including materials. I usually spec high end paints so figure $80ish per gallon, 2-3 gallons per room.
