I *JUST* bought some of these same pouches at Target last night!! Maybe I'll just go return them. I would never look at the food that closely....just goes right onto the spoon and into DS's mouth. Is that bad?!

@looch: The one I saw in the video posted to facebook was butternut squash and pear... but I think it seems to be a wider spread issue?

I just checked the EB website, and it looks like the company is saying there's no issue. Pouches are so difficult to inspect, I often just give my son the pouch and he self feeds.

Omg! Gross -- we just bought a bunch from target! I sent one with LO today. Yuck!

@looch: M self feeds too and now I'm freaked out. Someone in my office actually has a friend here in TN who found maggots in her LO's EB pouch this weekend, and the girl in the snopes article is in PA, so it doesn't seem to be an isolated event.

@MamaMoose: well crap! I give G the fruit and yogurt smoothie pouches, he has one as his mid morning snack.

@looch: Well the good news is none of the kids seem to be actually ingesting it (they spit it out immediately). And, as disgusting and disturbing as it is to us, it's not likely to actually hurt them. And the chances that you have a contaminated pouch as well are probably low. We decided that we'll only send a different brand to school and at home we'll squeeze some out onto a spoon before she eats it to check that it's clear.

There's been an update from the manufacturer:
Earth's Best
Dear Moms, Dads, Caretakers, and all our Valued Consumers,
We stand behind every product we make, and are 100% confident that these products are safe for your children.
As soon as we learned about a video posted on Facebook concerning Earth’s Best Organic Butternut Squash Pear Baby Food Puree in a pouch, we acted immediately to ensure that our highest quality standards were being met in every pouch we produce. We promised that we would update you as our investigation progressed and here is what we have learned:
- We went to the store where the mom who posted the video on Facebook said she purchased the product. We bought a variety of samples of Earth’s Best Organic Butternut Squash Pear Baby Food Puree in a pouch that was on the store shelves, including two from the same production date. Our testing did not show any contaminants or any signs of potential contamination and the product met our stringent quality standards.
- In accordance with our manufacturing practices, we keep samples from each production run. We tested product from this production run, including a sample which had been produced less than twelve minutes after the pouch bought by the mom who posted the video. We did not find a single contaminant or any signs of potential contamination, and the product met our stringent quality standards.
- We reached out to the mom who posted the video to arrange for us to inspect and test the pouch she had purchased. She initially agreed to allow us to retrieve the product, and we quickly arranged to pick up the product, but she changed her mind. Therefore, we have not been able to determine if there was some damage to the product after it left our control that could have compromised the product’s integrity.
- We even consulted with a well-respected etymologist about the possibility of insects or larvae being able to exist in the product. The scientist confirmed what we had already known. Current Good Manufacturing Practices, set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and which the company strictly adheres to, provide for high temperature processing of fruits and vegetables during the manufacturing of this product. Living insects would not be able to survive the heat treatment.
I am not just the Founder and CEO of The Hain Celestial Group, Inc., but (more importantly) I am the father of four children who were raised on Earth’s Best products and I would have no problem feeding any of these products to my children today. Many of our employees, friends and partners are also parents or other relatives of children who consume our products. I would not let a single product bear the Earth’s Best
label, and be eaten by my children or your children, unless I was confident that all of our products met the very highest quality and safety standards. Again, we stand behind every product we make and are 100% confident that these products are safe for your children and for my children.
All Earth’s Best products are manufactured to ensure safety, quality and stability. We always do our best to ensure product quality and follow up quickly and fully with any complaint or issues that any mom or dad may have brought to our attention. If you have any questions or concerns about our products, we urge you to call us at (800) 442-4221 or e-mail us at customer.care@earthsbest.com. These are staffed by Hain Celestial employees who can answer any questions you may have.
Thank you for the more than twenty five years of trust you have placed in Earth’s Best to provide healthy and nourishing products for your children, and thank you for your continued support over the next twenty five years and beyond.
Sincerely,
Irwin D. Simon,
Founder, President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board
The Hain Celestial Group, Inc.
