Oh no! That's the baby monitor I have bookmarked for the future.

@BabyBoecksMom: so scary!
We didn't have this monitor but we had another brand and one day my neighbor told me they could see my son from their house on one of the channels of their monitor! I used to regularly breastfeed DS in the play area where we had the monitor set up, ugh..

@Leialou: That's the same one I was going to get as well. I'm going to talk to some of my friends that work in networking and see if they know how to make it more secure.

Uggghhh. We have this monitor and just set it up. We only set it up to access if you are on our wireless network (which is protected). Hopefully that is enough.
Really though, hopefully I don't live near enough to any creeps like this who would do such a thing!

@lindseykaye: We set ours up the same way, but this still makes me nervous!

@Alivoo01: I was in the process of setting up the features that allow you to view the camera over another network (like via your phone when you're away) and stopped myself because it made me nervous. It would be convenient... but still freaks me out!

That is so disturbing! I would be a wreck if I heard some strange voices calling my LO's name over the monitor!

Eww ew ew! Calling the child's name and saying disgusting things is beyond creepy and disturbing.
honeydew / 7303 posts
@lindseykaye: that's how we have ours set up. You can also password protect the log in to the camera, which we have. It'd be almost impossible for someone to see anything unless they knew both passwords.

That just gave me chills! I would freaking DIE if I heard someone calling my daughter's name on her monitor!!!!
We have the motorola...I'm not sure if the whole "other people can sometimes see your nursery on their channel" happens with motorola, but I've seen a few people post that about other brands. Anyone have a motorola that does this?

Honestly, it's not a matter of "living near" someone who would do it. All you need is an internet connection, physical distance has nothing to do with it.
I think that people don't understand that when someone knows how to "hack", a password is not going to stop them. You are aware that someone could hack into your home computer, turn it into a drone computer and be able to use your applications, access your webcam, etc... all without you knowing? They could do this from the other side of the planet. There are programs people can run that will TELL them your password. They can find out your password, change it without you knowing, etc. It's not that hard. My BIL knows how to do it. He did it to my computer once to prove he could.
I think it's a good lesson that you need to take precautions with technology. You CAN take steps to prevent this kind of stuff from happening, but you have to be aware that it's a possibility in order to do that. A good place to start is changing your passwords every couple weeks.

@zippylef: that scares me! Our video monitor doesn't have sound, but I dont want someone watching my baby sleep!!! Or knowing when she's in her room alone.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@lindseykaye: same.
Although this is sick and creepy - this is the exact reason I avoided a regular video monitor - no security and likes @rachiecakes: said, neighbors could potentially see just with their camera picking up frequency.
to hack ours you'd have to first access our WIFI (which has such a difficult password I can never remember it), AND the camera login and password (which are both different than the WIFI login/pw). I feel the security is unmatchable as far as video monitors go.

We have a Foscam camera for our nursery. I'm not too concerned about the security of it. My husband is quite the computer nerd. Everything in our house is SUPER secure, including the camera. There are some creepy people out there so it is definitely good to be aware that you have to be careful with those types of cameras.

@BabyBoecksMom: WOW, SICK!
My husband made me promise that when we set up our foscam, I will NEVER leave it on while I am getting LO dressed or just after a bath.
Basically, ours will turn on as I walk out of his room at night, and turn off when we walk in his room in the morning.
It is scary!
Oh and, he made me promise to never go in the baby's room in the middle of the night without my bath robe closed
@PrincessBaby: Like LITERALLY DIE. I think cardiac arrest would take over if I heard a creepy voice say my son's name in the middle of the night. I would literally need CPR

We've never really used monitors. Sometimes we use a cell phone ap if we need it while M is asleep and we're on the front porch or something... but when Lala was little, we picked up a conversation on our monitor from someone else's monitor and that was enough to cure me of monitors!

Omg now I'm second guessing our video monitor !
@PrincessBaby: we have the Motorola too ?!?
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@PrincessBaby: @coacheswife123: @mamabear57: I'm under the impression that the Motorola doesn't connect to your internet and has it's own internal wireless connection, which would mean you'd have to be within it's range to hack it.
And the following article implies a built-in encryption for added security, so it seems unlikely to be hacked.

Although, the Motorola Blink does require a WiFi connection - so this one would be less secure.

Seriously??? How sick! We don't have this monitor, but it makes you second guess everything. Yikes!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@coacheswife123: I'm not expert though - that's just my understanding of it! I could be totally wrong! But I know our monitor didn't connect to our WiFi at all because we have security on that and didn't need to do anything, so I think it's got it's own internal thing, not connected to the internet. So random people across the country wouldn't be able to hack it. So I'm ASSUMING you'd have to be within it's range. AND they have built in encryption, so I think you should be pretty safe!
