There have been a lot of threads lately about preschool. This article came up in my FB feed today and it proves exactly what has worried me. And although I do think I can find good play-based preschool options, I don't think the same is true about Kindergarten which is sad and scary.

That is really interesting, though not surprising- I've seen a few similar article and posts on my FB feed lately.
Sometimes even at home with my 21 month old I feel like I should be doing more with her, but then I remember that playing IS learning. -
This is a big part of why we're homeschooling early on. I don't want her pushed into serious academics too young.

It's unfortunate that most of the public schools in our area do focus on academics in kindergarten and lower grades, probably due to standardized testing

@hilsy85: The saddest part is that the teachers themselves do not think it's a good idea! As a teacher myself, it's so frustrating to have the decisions made by non-educators.

This was an interesting read. I have always been pretty passionate about our child(ren) having a public school education. However, we are casually considering a Walforf school for Kindergarten and 1st grade. Of course, it would have to make financial sense and I'm hesitant about ripping her from a close knit community to transition schools at a tender age. We have a local charter elementary that draws from Waldorf philosophies, so if we were lucky to get in, that'd certainly be ideal. In the end, I think it's more about doing your research and knowing your local schools. Having worked in the field, I've come to know some absolutely amazing public, early elementary educators that really bust their asses to incorporate creative, play-based learning in their classrooms.

Florida just passed some legislation reducing the testing in k-2 unless their is a suspected deficiency or need.

Interesting article - I do wonder how my DS will do down the road - he is only in K right now but gets pulled out 2 times a week for doing accelerated math and reading - makes me wonder if he will always be ahead of the game or will it level out at some point
@T.H.O.U.: We are in PA and standardized testing doesn't start till 3rd grade and K is only 1/2 day

As a teacher and a parent, I definitely think that the Kindergarten standards are too much. The majority of children are developmentally ready to learn to begin to read sometime between age 4 and 7...pushing kids to read at 5 means that about half the kids aren't even capable of doing what they're being asked to do! Four and five year old kids should be running and playing, not sitting in a classroom all day.

@Mamaof2: that's great it's only half a day. Here too the standardized summative test starts in grade 3. But there were lots of other formative (some standardized and some not) testing going on just out of routine.
