A couple changed their baby in the seating area of a Starbucks. Where are acceptable public places to change a diaper?

We change them anywhere and every where.. including restaurant booths. I always put a blanket down first.

I read that-- there was no changing station in the bathroom. I really don't know-- I mean, on one hand, yeah, that seems pretty darn gross, but on the other... what are you supposed to do? Baby will get a rash if they don't get changed, right? I guess I'd just try to be as discreet as possible.

Same. If there isn't an appropriate place in the bathroom, we will change him wherever we have to.

I don't feel comfortable exposing my baby's parts for all to see. I probably would've tried to find a more private spot. But those employees were pretty rude about it.

I have changed my babies in various public areas, but I try to be discreet. I have never been in a Starbucks that has had a changing table... And the issue in that story, in my opinion, is the father dumping the coffee on the floor. Was that really necessary? The employee throwing a rag, totally out of line, but the father didn't need to escalate the situation either.

We'll check for a changing table and if the bathrooms don't have one we'll change him in the backseat of our suburban.

I've changed L at a booth on a froyo place, but we were the only customers in there and it was a #1. If it was #2 I would have dragged him next door to BRU. (Which is what they want customers to do- they don't have a changing table on purpose. Annoying.)
But now I have a minivan so we could change him in there.

I'd probably take LO out to the car. I think it is kind of gross to change a baby where people eat...

There's wasn't a changing station.... Starbucks should probably fix that! And that employee was WAY out of line. I think I'd be upset if DH reacted like that BUT I say go him for standing up for his wife! He made clear that noone is going to treat her rudely! lol
I generally change P in the car or where there is a changing station... generally she doesn't need to be changed while we're out anyways.

I don't like diaper changes where people eat. If there's no changing table I go to our car or ill go outside and find a park or bench as a last resort.

I try to avoid public changes, but have had to resort to the floor of an ill equipped Starbucks. Had I had any better option I would have used it. So gross.
The husband should not have dumped his coffee. The whole thing should have been handled better.

I think it's gross to change a baby where ppl eat so I wouldn't change my baby in a restaurant booth or anything. I will change her in the car if there's no changing table.

@banana: I agree-- you never know who else could be watching, which is a sad thought to have.
I agree that I'd go to my car if I had one with me, but I rarely drive so it won't be an option.

I believe that babies should be fed anywhere. I don't believe the same for changing them. The argument for breastfeeding is who wants to eat where you poop and that means not changing poop where others eat. We use the car or the floor of the bathroom, or the counter or any other surface.

I've heard of a few people who have complained about this at various Starbucks. I guess even store managers have acknowledged that it's a problem but that they were unable to do anything about it because it's not part of their business model.

we try to be as discreet as possible, especially in eating areas. if we have the car, we do it in there, but it would be hard with a toddler. i wouldn't have poured my drink on the floor, but written a letter to corporate about the way we were treated. i think diaper changes aren't a "right" in the same way breastfeeding is. it's going to the bathroom, not eating, you know?

I doubt that Starbucks employee has kids! I guess it would depend on the situation, but Starbucks is hard. If the car were close, I would go to the car. I have changed out in the seating area at a restaurant a few select times, when it was a booth and I tried to be discreet about it. Few times I even put the changing pad on the floor of the bathroom (single person no stall bathroom) which grossed me out but I didn't know what to do. At Chinese restaurants sometimes I push chairs together that they may have in the bathroom hallway and use those. It's hard! I don't think people should be judged for what they end up doing.
