We had the lovely experience of LO2 throwing up in the car today, I was able to wash the car seat cover and I tried to wipe down the straps with a few different things but they still stink. Any tips for getting puke smell out of car seat straps?

@Bao: lots of sunshine might help with the smell but unfortunately you can only clean the straps according to the instructions in your manual. Fingers crossed you can get rid of the stink!

This is a bit labor intensive, but I just did it the old-fashioned way after my toddler threw up in the car yesterday... After I took off all the cushioning/soft parts of the car seat, I used bowls of clean water to soak, soap up, and rinse the straps. I only used hand soap so it would rinse pretty easily, and there is absolutely no smell now.

Same thing happened to us on Thursday. I mixed baking soda and water and scrubbed the straps and then rinsed them off with plain water. Worked like a charm.

Here's a good article about cleaning your car seat and it's worth noting that failing to follow the cleaning instructions in your manual could mean that your car seat doesn't perform as it should in an accident.

The rules on cleaning straps are pretty strict. But they also aren't usually all that expensive to replace if they stay smelly.

I used Nature's Miracle (Pet Smart) on our car seat when my daughter spilled milk on her car seat.

@Bao: my daughter gets carsick so I've done this a few times. Don't fully remove the straps and don't fully immerse them in water. Use a toothbrush (new or old, but clearly don't use yours lol) to scrub the straps in a circular motion. Use water, then a mix of half vinegar and half water with a tiny bit of dish soap. Then re-brush with water. Let air dry in the sun. Should be good as new.
