Where do you pump if you work in a profession where you don't have an office? For example... I work in health care. I'm in my office a couple of days, but for the most part I work in the emergency room. I have absolutely no clue where I'm going to pump!

Employers are legally required to have somewhere private for you to pump. Does your hospital have mothers' rooms?

No pumping room here either. I work with all men. I'll probably go into DH's office which is way, WAY less than ideal.

I work in a cubicle but my company has a designated 'pumping' room which is just an interior conference room with no windows with a door that locks. It is supposed to only be used for pumping and there are signs all overy stating so, but people still ignore it and bring their lunches in there so I've heard that you have to put up with the smell of whatever someone just ate!

We have a "mother's room" in the office which is nice. But if it's occupied, there is also a small closet that is available for pumping mothers. Not the best but it'll do.

@JoJoGirl: Nope. I've asked a few of the nurses who have recently had babies, and they said they all gave it up before returning to work because their schedule is too hectic to pump. I'm in social work/case management, so I have more control of my daily schedule than they do but finding a designated consistent spot seems like its going to be difficult.

emergency/first aid room and also a blacked out/locked conference room that is used as the "nursing room" in our building.

My company is really small and has an open concept office so when I go back to work I'm either going to have to wean, pump at my desk while sitting next to my boss, or pump in the common bathroom that we share with six other office.
I'm really not looking forward to making that decision.

Are there any outlets in the restrooms? I get a stall with a table for my pump

I work at a school and pump in the Infirmary.
Like PP mentioned, they have to give you a place.
There's also your car! That's where I pump if I'm off site for some reason.

@grizz: Does your hospital have a maternity unit and/or NICU? I work at a hospital, too (also a SWer!), and I am able to utilize the lactation room in the NICU. Which also means that I am able to use the hospital-grade pumps!

We have a pretty small office and it's entirely open concept - no doors! The only place i can go is the bathroom, it's a single though... i feel bad because there are a lot of women in the office and I obviously hog it - but it's the only place I can go!

The emergency/first aid room. Thankfully no one needed it when I was in there! A few times someone was using the room when I went to pump and they would stick me in the interview rooms that don't lock (I put my chair against the door in those cases).

@grizz: Just go and ask the unit clerk. Better yet, call your hospital's lactation consultant! Not only do I get to use the room and the pumps, but she also hooked me up with an extra set of tubing and supplies!

Where I work we have a mother's room on the technology floor. I see the computer guys all the time. They didn't charge me for borrowing a mouse when mine broke because they see me at least twice a day. Today, I was asking about rubber bands because I left my pumping bra at home and had to do the rubber band trick.

If your company has over 50 employees, which I'm sure a hospital does, then they are required to provide a place that is not a bathroom. Ask HR, and I'd bet that there is a room designated for pumping.

My office has a single bathroom with a table/chair and an outlet.

@Modern Daisy: I would totally intentionally pump during someone's lunch time and kick them out, LOL!

You should read the regulation at the dol.gov. Learn your own rights. I had to do this.

We have a pumping room. It is on the other side of the building so I might just use a storage closet like another Mom did.

I have my own office now but before I had to use the conference room, if that wasn't available I could use someone else's office if they weren't there or as a last resort the single handicap bathroom. Although I work for a large university that has pumping rooms, my division is offsite so it wasn't convenient to use the pumping rooms.

I pumped in a conference room when it was empty.
That would be the perfect place!
