I would call your OB and ask about this. The doctors told me when I first started nursing not to worry about baby ingesting a little blood from my cracked/raw nipples, but if there are clots in the actual milk months after breastfeeding is established I think that warrants a call.

I would call my OB. Once a week and clots doesn't seem normal.

@josina: I was going to call my OB but it never happened again. If you're experiencing if often, I would definitely call. It's probably nothing, but better safe than sorry.

I did a couple of times. The first time I had a cover on and I peeked under and the milk was bright pink - it was terrifying! It turned out that I had a pretty badly cracked nipple.

I remember reading this thread a while ago.

Last night at the 6 month mark (I'm an EPer) this happened to me for the first time! It was actually quite a bit of blood and it looked like lots of clots.

I had a clot duct (on my right side) on two days ago, yesterday morning I rubbed a bit dry milk/dry skin spot on my right nipple and then yesterday night (right before bed pump) I had bloody milk on the right side. It actually quite a lot of blood. I ended up dumping it even though the internets said it was okay.

I believe when I rubbed the dry milk / dry skin spot that it created a crack on my nipple.

This morning I pumped at half my normal strength setting and there was no blood. I'm not sure what happened but other places I read seem to think it will be fine. Anyways just writing it here as sort of a documentation of this event.

@josina: I had another blood thing yesterday so I pump 4 times a day I had my first bloody (it was bloody) milk on Tuesday night (2 nights ago) and my milk was fine the next morning but then at work during my lunch break I had a lot of blood come out again!

Yesterday was my LO's 6 month appointment and I was taking a half day anyways so I went a little early to swing by the LC office and ask them about it. Totally too much blood to give LO and told me to dump the milks. They looked at my nipple and told me it should be okay but it if doesn't get better in a week to get an appointment with my OB.

In the mean time I am suppose to pump on super low and supplement with formula till it heals.

The last 3 pumps have been blood less though so I think I will just pump on the lowest possible setting that still gets my milk out... but my pump sessions have gone from 20 minutes to about 30-40 minutes.
