At 14m LO is just starting to really like shape sorters. She still needs help but once in awhile gets the right one in and is very proud of herself. She doesn't understand puzzles that much yet, but she likes taking all the pieces out. I say just keep playing with your LO and these toys, leave them out for her to explore and if she gets tired or doesn't show interest then move on to something else!

Sadie will be 20 months in a little over a week, and she loves puzzles. We have a shape sorter, but it's probably her least favorite toy. She never plays with it.

Sadie is impatient too, and very independent. She doesn't want my help with things unless she asks for it. I just offered the puzzles every day. Some days she would try, and some days she just wasn't into them. I always tried to make it fun though. I would talk about what we're doing--e.g.: "This is an oval! It's orange. Can you say oval? That's a funny shape, huh? Like a squished up circle! Do you think you could find the spot where this oval fits?" And, then celebrate and clap when she got it right. Even if she didn't fit it into the spot correctly, if she put the piece over the right shape/animal/whatever, we would clap. Eventually, from moving it around herself and watching me, she figured out how to get them in the spot correctly. She was right around 18m when she really started "getting" them.

Now that Sadie's more verbal, she's enjoying them even more. She can recognize the shapes, colors, animals, whatever, so it makes it more fun for her. It's like she finally really understands it. She's playing with them independently now too, which is nice. She likes to show me the pieces and say "boooo" or "puuuple."

Like with any other thing K's learning, it's a process. She will figure it out in time. Just give her plenty of opportunities to experiment and learn.

Also, wanted to add that Sadie still prefers the M&D chunky puzzles and wooden knob puzzles. We have some of the peg puzzles, which she will play with, but prefers the two other types more.

I am getting her more shape sorters in a wooden block and also shape puzzles this weekend. We had a playdate on Wednesday and the 2 year old was very annoyed that my DD (16 months) did not know her shapes yet. "No, no it doesn't go there!" I told the highly verbal 2 year old that we would work on our shapes some more. LOL It was so funny and cute to watch!

She is almost 13 months and she will do them, but only if someone is talking her through it! Otherwise yeah, she just gets impatient and gives up.

B has always been very good at puzzles and shape sorters. He is 2 and plays with 3 to 4 year old puzzles. He really got into puzzles a little after he turned 1. Before 1 he liked stacking blocks.

She has done the FP sorter since 12 months. But she doesn'tove it. She gets frustrated when she can't get them in. But we tell her to keep trying.

She doesn't love puzzles at home at all. But they have the same ones at school and her reports every day says she played with them.
