DH and I are planning to start TTC in March. I know there's a great chance that we won't be successful the first month, but if we were my due date would be in mid-December (about a week before Christmas). Does anyone with a birthday around this time hate that their birthday is so close to Christmas? Would this be a reason that you would put off TTC for a month? My gut tells me just to go for it and see what happens, but I've never had to deal with a birthday so close to the holidays and don't want my LO to hate it!

I don't have a December birthday, but my birthday is January 1st, exactly a week after Christmas. The only time I ever hated my birthday was when I turned 21, which happened to be a Sunday, and all the bars were closed.
Both my parents have December birthdays, and while it can be tough for us (we have to get birthday AND Christmas presents for both of them at the same time), I don't think they, or us, hate it.
Here's a tip though: if you do have a December baby, make sure you keep their birthday SEPARATE from Christmas. No one likes their birthday lumped into another holiday or forgotten altogether. As long as you celebrate their birthday as if it was any other time of the year, I think they'll be fine!
Plus if it's really close to Christmas, they may get their birthday off from school or work. I LOVE having my birthday off every year!

Well, mine is the 31st, so New Year's Eve. I liked it a lot when I was younger, but as I've gotten older, I really don't like it at all! There's always SO much hype around having a holiday birthday, especially something like NYE--I kind of wish I were born on the 30th instead! Being close to Christmas never bothered me; but then again we're Jewish and don't really celebrate Christmas
I don't think I'd like to be born ON Christmas if I did celebrate it though.

@hilsy85: Ugh, NYE is just as bad as New Year's!!! My problems now are that people are always hung over or uninterested in getting together AGAIN the day after NYE. They're always partied out from the day before and just want to spend New Year's relaxing and not hanging out with me. But with a NYE birthday, people probably always forget it's your birthday and are just totally focused on NYE and completely forget about you! So sorry!!

@Adira: hah yeaah...it's okay though! I will say that my 21st birthday was THE WORST birthday I've ever had--my friends all got uber wasted by like 11:30 at a NYE party and I was left, sober, to take them all home! It sucked.
ETA that even with my experience, I wouldn't put off TTC just because LO might be born on Christmas or NYE. The odds of that are very slim! :0

Mine's the 3rd but I'm jewish so christmas was never an issue.

LO is due in December, so I've actually been asking this same question to everyone I meet with a December birthday, haha! Most people say it doesn't matter, unless they were born right on the holiday. I wouldn't worry about it.

TTC has so many variables... I wouldn't worry too much about it!

My brother's birthday was Dec. 19 and he's never complained about it. I think when he was a kid we had his non-family birthday parties a couple weeks earlier since people get busy around the holidays. If anything, he lucks out since I always remember his birthday and I'm already out Christmas shopping so he tends to actually still get birthday presents where I don't always buy them for my older sibling anymore.

@Adira: Thanks! I will definitely keep it separate if it turns out that he/she is born then. I was thinking I could even tell them when they're little that Santa brings extra presents wrapped in birthday wrapping paper for kids with birthdays close to Christmas, especially if he/she happens to be born on Christmas day!
@hilsy85: DH would be so happy if we had a baby on NYE because then we could still count the baby as a tax deduction. Men!!

I agree with the others that you shouldn't worry about it. If you do end up with a child who has a birthday on or near a holiday, just try to keep their birthdays birthday-themed (as opposed to using Christmas wrapping paper for their birthday presents or buying them Christmas decorations as gifts, etc) and ALWAYS remember that it's their birthday, even if it's another day as well!
I'll always remember that one time my family was at my grandparents for New Year's and my AUNT wished me a happy birthday before my own parents did, who responded with "Oh yeah! I can't believe I forgot!"

Don't even worry about the date. Seriously. You never know when you'll get pregnant. That being said, family members have birthdays in Dec on the 1st, 14th and 25th. They don't hate it.

Go ahead and TTC when it works for you. Don't worry about birthdays falling near holidays. I'm due Nov 25th so my baby is almost sure to have their birthday fall on Thanksgiving day every few years. It doesn't both me a bit. When the child is younger we will be sure to have a very separate celebration. And I think as you get older your birthday becomes less and less of a big deal and people don't need so much attention for it.

My birthday is December 8th. I'll be honest. Especially as a kid, I always hated that my birthday was in December. I always told myself I would never have a December baby. Guess my due date? 12-12-12.
First of all, I often got joint birthday/christmas gifts. I definitely feel like I got the short end of the deal with presents.
Secondly, living in a cold climate, we often had snowstorms around my birthday, and my parties often got cancelled because it was too dangerous for the other kids parents to drive.
That said, would that be a reason in itself to not TTC? No. There are many other birthday dates that are not ideal - July 4th, Easter, Thanksgiving etc. Just like everyone says, bear in mind that you'll want to keep Christmas / Birthday's separate. NO JOINT GIFTS!

Mine is Dec 20 and when I was younger I wasnt too happy about being so close to Christmas but my mum did a great job of making sure I had a special day (no birthday gifts in Xmas wrapping paper, no decorations in the house until after my birthday).
Now when I'm older it's great because I usually have some time off, people are generally in a party mood and chances are greater of meeting up with family and old friends around that time of year. -
I get the no doing joint gifts yourself, but it is impossible to enforce with others. I know my son is little, so hopefully he doesn't get the shaft every year (his bday is Jan 8)... but this year both my sister and my parents kind of ignored his birthday gift-wise. He was only a year old so whatever, but I really hope they don't do this in the future! if it happens once he is old enough to notice I am totally saying something.

We started TTC in March of last year and were kinda worried about it as well... in the end the important thing is that we have a baby, regardless of when they were born!!
However my little sis was born two days before Christmas and doesn't seem to mind
my mom was always mindful to separate her birthday and Christmas though. We usually celebrate her birthday closer to Thanksgiving.

I am due Christmas Eve and have already talked with DH that we will always make the birthday special regardles of when he/she comes. when they get older maybe they can have a fun birthday since they are off of school for the week between Christmas and new years. I think as long as you make it seperate from the holidays then it should be fine.

My mom does, and my best friend's mom, and my grandma and grandpa did, too. They all didn't particularly love it--enough that I know about it even though I'm the kid.
Then again, I have several friends born ON Christmas and none of them seem to mind! -
Husband's bday is very end of November, and mine is mid-November. It's never bothered either of us. My best friends is two days after Christmas, she doesn't mind either =)

Mine is 12/12 and it never bothered me too much. Occasionally people try to lump my gifts or give me a "little" gift for one of the two since they are so close (I'm talking to you, DH!) which is sort of annoying. On the other hand, my sisters is 12/28 and she hates it! I think it's worse just after Chrstmas because people are all partied out! At least mine is during the lead up

There are pros and cons to every birthday. Mine is in the summer, it sucked because no one was around for parties. My son's birthday is in December. Would I knowingly have not TTC'd in March because of the risk I might give birth in December? No. Too many other variables, but if it makes you feel better, then skip that month.
For me, taking the chance was worth it. If that was the only month that it was possible I would have conceived, I am glad I didn't skip it, you know?

my little sweetie was born 12/17/2011 and I can't wait to celebrate his first birthday! I plan to celebrate in a special way every year and just hope when he's school-age he won't miss out too much with trying to plan parties with friends.

The way I see it is that even if for some reason they do grow up and dislike the timing of their birthday, I highly doubt they would ever tie it back to you like "Geez mom, could you have planned for me to be born in a different month next time?". I doubt they would hold you "responsible" so to speak.

Mine is 2 weeks before Christmas and I love it! Always have! My parents always kept both events very separate (never wrapped my b-day presents in Christmas paper, never had Christmassy birthday parties etc.) so I think as long as you do that there shouldn't be a problem! I like to think of the whole holiday season as my 'birthday season' lol.

My co-worker is a Dec 28th baby and told me that she hated it growing up.... if we hadn't gotten our bfp on the cycle that we did, we were planning on taking it easy the next cycle then starting up again to shoot for jan+ due date~

I'm worried about this. Baby's birthday is New Year's Eve and I just want to make his birthday special and different from Christmas. And to be totally selfish, does this mean hubs and I can't go out on New Year's anymore or have to have a kid-friendly party?

My lil sis has the 23rd of Dec for her birthday...and her due date was January 10th! So you really can't plan. She likes it though, because it's a big party time and she gets tons of stuff at once and as kids we were always jealous she had twice as many toys!
I don't think I'd like to be born ON Christmas if I did celebrate it though.
