Ok, FTM question! I have been told by several people to bring a few bottles of formula (the small ones) to the hospital when we deliver just in case. When I was at the store today looking I noticed that the ready made ones say to attach the nipple and ring which is sold separately. Where do I get these? I looked through all the isles. Are these just normal bottle rings and nipples??

The hospital has formula. I wouldn't worry about it.

Here in Canada there are 2 kinds of ready to feed... The ones in the carton that need to be put into a regular bottle, and the "nursers" that come with the nipple. They look like this , I assume the US would have something similar?

Our hospital had the small bottles and nipples. However, I would suggest bringing your own slow flow nipples if you're planning on breastfeeding. We gave LO some formula in the hospital using one of their fast flow nipples and it was a nightmare getting her to nurse again.
Yes, we used normal rings and nipples - I don't think there are special ones the mini bottles.

Don't waste your money! The hospital has all different kinds, and they will give you some for there and some to take with you.
ETA: We ran out of ready to feeds from the hospital, and they were so great in the middle of the night (can grab them off the side table, no mixing or getting up), so we bought more. I think we used them the first month. yeah, the hospital will give you formula, don't worry about it.

@Smurfette: our hospital did have formula but since it was a "baby friendly" hospital it was very very very difficult to access (many tears, pleading and begging at 3am, needing to get doctor permission etc). For next LO I will definitely bring my own to not have to deal with the hassle if I need some!

Agree with @Smurfette, the hospital will have formula for you so I wouldn't worry about it.

I am in Canada, and have been told by friends who have delivered at the hospital I will be that if baby is in the room with me I will not be provided any. Only if they are in NICU or something like that will they be provided. They do provide the mom with a pump so that baby can eat that. FTM, just want to have my bases covered!
I was looking at the ready to feed small bottles- 59 ml I think. -
@Charm54: I have heard the same lately regarding some hospitals that are VERY pro breastfeeding.
My hospital did give us some samples to take home and the SNS system. But that was only because we had feeding issues. ie LO crying non stop the whole time at the hospital because she was hungry.

@Smurfette: here in Canada free samples are very rare (I've never been given one). Some hospitals are more hardcore than others in limiting access to formula.
OP , maybe ask your hospital what their policies are? It would definitely save $$ and be more convenient if you could use theirs easily.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: it was a terrible, horrible experience and not friendly to my baby at all who suffered from severe jaundice and dehydration due to my low supply and their refusal to grant my requests for formula. For next LOs I will bring my own and avoid that mess completely
@MrsScottish: ETA: apparently they no longer make the goodstart with included nipples! I would think the cheap slow-flow gerbers would fit? Sorry that's not much help!

@Charm54: thanks for the info, I only saw Similac and Enfamil but will look for ready start the next time I am at the store. They came in a 6 or 8 pack I think. Thats a great idea of donating it if you dont need it. Thanks!

@Charm54: Same situation for us! My LOs lost a ton of weight (milk didn't come in until day 5 PP) and they said I'd have to supplement....with pumped milk. There was no milk! Finally on the last day they brought formula in.
We were given these nipples in the hospital. They fit on ready to eat bottles and all our other Medela bottles. We still use them now because they are slower than the slow flow Medela ones!

These are the nipples we use with the small RTF bottles...I think for Similac buying directly from Abbott had the best price although we haven't had to buy them yet.

These stories about hospitals refusing to provide formula are bizarre. So sorry you were treated that way!
I was in a baby-friendly hospital with midwives, but as soon as there was an issue (LO wasn't keeping his blood sugar up), they had the formula ready to go. Of course, they also brought in a pump and showed me how to use it so that supplementing wouldn't damage my supply.

I'm also in Canada and delivered at a childrens hospital and they had a list of things to bring that were not provided. Formula was one of them. However, I did see others who didn't bring any and were given the ready feed nursers.
I would bring some because I don't think it's the norm for them to provide formula. -
I bought a case of those on amazon! They also fit the Medela bottles. I used to pump into 2oz Medela bottles and the regular Medea nipples were too fast for LO and he had developed a preference for those while we were in the hospital.

We were essentially forced to feed our babies formula in the hospital, in Canada...given to us! We got all sorts of freebies at the hospital, too. The one thing that we didn't bring (or actually even have at home) with the first? Diapers! LOL! And the hospital we were at uses cloth diapers...soooo oops! They had to ask another family for a diaper for us to take LO home in!

Yeah the list from my OB says diapers, wipes, formula, then all the stuff for me. My SIL said the same thing that not much is given if baby is fine and healthy and in the room with you. My nephew was in nicu so was a bit different as they had to feed on a schedule. They would use anything she could pump then formula.
So to my original question, if I can find medela bottles then the rings and nipples should fit??

Sign up for Similac baby club, nestle baby club, enfamil and they will all send you samples. I had samples of all three of the ready to feed ones. I never did take them to the hospital.
They had the ready to feed formula at the hospital I was at and DS was given some due to having low blood sugar and I was having a hard time getting him to latch at first until I saw a lactation consultant.
