I'm gearing up for preschool applications and it is pretty competitive. I stay home with the kids. I have no clue how to word this! I think I used "homemaker" for my mom on school forms but I don't know if that is outdated now?

I actually put 'self-employed' on all forms. I am a SAHM. My husband is a business owner and I've worked for him in the past n I'd just rather not label myself as a SAHM on forms for schools/drs etc.

SAHM may be valuable to a preschool, they could look at that and think "oooo another mom to help with PTA, etc, etc" If you do any volunteer work you should emphasize that as well.

Does homemaker/SAHM put you at a disadvantage (lower priority) for qualifying for childcare? It definitely does here. I would probably go with what @JerricaBenton: said and say self-employed.
