If you had your placenta encapsulated, which method was used? Do you have an opinion on the pros and cons?
I knew I want it done with this pregnancy, but I didn't realize there were different methods until the encapsulator asked which method I prefer. I'm mainly planning to take it for a milk-making boost, with PPD issues being a close second reason.

um. If by traditional Chinese method you mean putting it into a red envelope like my mom told me to then I'd encapsulate it if it's for future consumption!

@regberadaisy: Lol, no- the TCM involves steaming it with certain herbs before dehydration and encapsulation.

You know that's why I did it. I did some research and decided to go with the raw method (we did dehydrate slightly at a fairly low temp. My reasoning, which seemed to be backed by the research that I did, is that consumption of raw placenta would be the biological and historical norm. I.E. for animal species who consume the placenta, and our really far back ancestors, raw consumption is the norm. It seemed like it would be beneficial to have non-denatured proteins, etc. to maximize efficacy.

@Mrs. Twine: Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking right off the bat, but the encapsulator suggested the TCM for milk supply issues. So now I'm reading too much and realizing that it's probably not that big of an issue- either way it's going to be beneficial.

@Mrs. Twine:, what do you think of the concern that all that progesterone from consuming the placenta could actually impede milk production in the case of IGT, instead of helping?

@FarmWifeGina: I don't have actual diagnosed IGT, but I have always suspected that it is part of my problem. I read the studies, but anecdotal evidence seemed to weigh on the opposite side. In my case, at least, I went from producing an almost infinitessimal part of my child's caloric needs (in Ellie's case) to EBF with Lorelei. I did not encapsulate, but used my frozen placenta in smoothies daily until it was gone. I also took MM Special Blend with the goat's rue. Drank a "milk" tea, and took domperidone. So it's not like it was unassisted. But it really helped, I think. I have every crossable part of my body crossed for you!

I've never heard of the methods - we dehydrated and encapsulated mine ... found that it worked.
What is IGT?

@Mrs. Twine: Thanks! It's such a puzzle, isn't it? I keep reading about more and more herbs and supplements that are beneficial galactlogues (sp?) and how different ones in different combinations help some women, but the same thing is actually a hindrance to others. ACK! It's overwhelming.

@Ginger333: IGT is insufficient glandular tissue. Basically the tissue that makes milk in the breast. It is unrelated to breast size, interestingly enough, although from what I have read it is more typical in smaller to average breasted women.

@Ginger333: Insufficient Glandular Tissue. Literally not having sufficient mammary glands to produce an adequate amount of milk.
I've never actually been diagnosed either, except by myself and a lot of research; I have quite a number of markers. Lactation consultants and doctors aren't exactly up on this stuff (even my midwife had never heard of it) in my neck of the woods.

@FarmWifeGina: Yes, it is SO confusing. I think I just lucked out in finding a combination that worked for me. I do feel a little relieved at the fact that I will likely never have to think about that on my own behalf ever again!

@Mrs. Twine: Yes! I wish someone would just give me a magic plan that would be guaranteed to work! But that would be too easy, of course.
And I totally think we should get together sometime. If our crop does well here in the next couple of weeks, we're planning a kitchen remodel and seriously considering Ikea cabinets- if we do that, we have to decide if we're going to Denver or Minneapolis for those sometime this winter.

@farmwifegina ahhhhh I know what that is, I had never see the acronym before. Are you finding that Goat's Rue is helping? Have you ever tried Goat's Rue tea? (sorry if I'm too nosey and off topic).

@Ginger333: I don't know- I'm still pregnant and didn't use it with my previous babies. Also, Goat's Rue is really expensive on it's own, so I'm not sure how I'm going to take it yet- tea, a tincture like @Mrs. Twine: mentioned, or straight up capsules of the stuff.

@farmwifegina - I've done all of the above (for PCOS) except the tincture ... MotherLove makes a straight up GR that is the same price as MMP that I like. For me though, the tea is way cheaper and I steep it with Earth Mama Angel Baby Nursemaid Tea. It works pretty well for my needs that way ...

@Ginger333: Oh, really? I didn't know about MotherLove's- or more likely, I forgot. The thing is that I am just NOT a tea drinker. I'm not diligent enough about it to take in the amount I need. I do better with pills and things to take at certain times.

I found the alcohol based tincture to work the best for me. Though I sometimes took capsules because they were easier to manage out of the house.
@FarmWifeGina: I'll have to e-mail you or something for ideas about getting together. It'd be really nice.
