How does your daycare (or how do you tell your daycare) to handle bottles of milk that your child doesn't finish?
Say you have 4 oz bottles and your child eats 2 oz and refuses the rest. Is the bottle discarded? Is the bottle put back in the fridge and re-heated for the next feeding? Is the bottle left out and offered at a later time?

NY state regulations state they cannot reoffer bottles of breastmilk. So what they have done for me is put it back in the fridge so if I want to reoffer, I can.

Here, they can't put it back in the fridge but can continue to offer it for up to an hour after it was heated. After that, it has to be discarded.

They have an hour to offer the bottle again and then they can't anymore. They're supposed to dump the BM but we can sign a waiver asking them to put the remainder back in the fridge. I would reuse it again (I know you're not technically supposed to) once and then throw it out.

I told them it was ok to reoffer any unused milk.

Our daycare gives it up to an hour after it is warmed and they will re offer within the hour. After that they throw it away. You can always do smaller bottles, like 2 or 3 ounces.

Our state guidelines (Michigan) are that they can re-offer within an hour of it being warmed, and at that point anything leftover must be discarded. That rule applies whether it is breastmilk or formula. My daycare encouraged me to bring more smaller bottles when LO's feeding schedule was still pretty unpredictable to avoid this. Even now, he doesn't always want his morning bottle (8oz) all at once, so they have me split it up between two different bottles with 4oz in each one so that they don't end up wasting anything.

Our daycare throws away after a hour. Bacteria on the nipple can end up in the bottle. Putting it back in the fridge doesn't stop the contamination.

Ours also reoffers if it's within an hour, then discards. We ended up giving only 3 ounce bottles every two hours for a very long time (which matched that she usually nursed every 2 hours during the day)...eventually bumped it up to 3.5 ounces and then 4 ounces.

I always thought breastmilk should never be heated? Something about destroying the enzymes?

@MoonMoon: you can warm slowly via bottle warmer or putting the bottle in a container of warm water. Daycare uses a small crockpot they keep on warm!

Mine didn't reuse. They had a time period that they waited and re- offered. So what I did was bought several small bottles and out 2 oz in them. That way the unused 2oz bottle I could take home. I think they do this because of texas law or their own franchise policy

They didn't reuse it. I would just send in 3oz bottles and expect to lose some.

They would leave it setting out for a little bit (30min or so) and see if he wanted it but not all he way until antoher feeding.
