My daughter is the ONLY Asian kid in the entire daycare (from what I've observed over the last year).
Today was the summer concert and my parents came to watch. We were the only Asian family and DD was the only Asian kid of over 60 kids that were participating today.
We've never experienced discrimination or anything like that - we love the daycare and they love DD. I guess it just didn't seem so obvious until today that we really are a minority where we live!

DD was one of two Asians at our daycare. Now our Montessori school is a bit more diverse because it attracts a lot of ex-pats.

I think there may be one Asian kid total in our daycare, too. It's not very culturally diverse which is amazing considering the area we live in!

Yup same here, the only other non Caucasian is one African American. I would rather she be in a more diverse daycare....

I hate to generalize but one thing I have noticed is that the Asians come at a later age to our day care, like preschool age. My kids have always been the only or one of very few Asians until maybe age 2. Quite a few Asian moms I know have a nanny at home or just watch the kids themselves until that point.

On a similar note, we live in not a particularly diverse neighbourhood (I'm Caucasian), but 90% of the babies at storytime are Asian. Mostly with an older caretaker.
I wonder if there is a higher percentage of "grandma" care among Asian families? Perhaps a cultural thing?

I think we are the only minority family at our daycare as well! Doesn't phase us because we both grew up that way.

@wheres_c: Really? I used to intern at the elementary school near you (I sound like a stalker), and it was super diverse. They even had a vietnamese ESL class there.
My city is super weird, but I wouldn't be surprised if LO was the only mixed asian/caucasian child if she were in a daycare.

I grew up in the suburbs so there was less than 4 Asians in my class. I don't think I realized this until a couple of years ago.

Where I live is about 99% white. If you go into the metro area it's a lot more diverse. But my city def is not which is a shame.

I love that our Montessori is so diverse. In Lala's classroom there are South Asian, Asian, Latino, and Eastern European kids, not to mention representation from Europe, Austrailia/NZ. I bet there are more than 10 languages spoken by our families.
In M's classroom, she's the only African American child, but there are Asian and South Asian and Latino kids... so she's got her brown brethren! There are other biracial and AA kids in our school though.

@T-Mom: that is true!! All of my friends who have fam nearby dont believe in daycare, so most send their kids around the 2-3 year mark.
@Rubies: i am not surprised...isnt your area predominantly caucasian?

My area is predominantly white - especially the suburb where the daycare is - and the baby room reflects that - but after that my daycare does have a good mix, especially for the area.

I know a few African American families at our daycare. But I've only ever noticed one little Asian girl and she has white adoptive parents. I've not yet met any Asian parents. It's not too diverse here in the Bible Belt.

Daycare just started up again this Monday and yesterday I saw a bunch of pre-schoolers walking past my house to the Elementary school. They were ALL blonde! Corn silk, platinum blonde O_O!

We visited one daycare that was very diverse...but it was, well, kind of a crappy daycare! And dirt cheap (in kind of a bad way). The man and woman running it were Chinese, though.
Our area is not terribly diverse....there are only white kids in our LO's two in-home daycares. Her korean middle name will surely be super exotic when middle names are used in school

Our daycare is 40% Asian, 60% white, which doesn't accurately reflect the demographic makeup of our neighborhood since asians are probably the smallest ethnic group. But all the Asians are also mixed!

Totally agree that most Asians just have grandparents taking care of LOs until 2-3. My daycare is in Chinatown and my LO is the only Asian in the infant class and there are no Asians in the toddler class either. But once you get to the pre-K room (3-4 years old), it's 70% Asian kids in there!

Asians are definitely a minority where we live. LO was the only Asian at his daycare too but I expected that. His current school is more diverse though.
