A friend of mine gave birth last month without an epidural because she wasn't allowed one (apparently, it was due to a very mild allergy of hers.) She was counting on one her whole pregnancy.
Now I am curious...what are the reasons you cant have an epidural?

Common reasons are low platelets or other bleeding problems as well as some back/spine conditions.

I was *this* close to not being able to have one with LO2 because of low platelets.

I suffered permanent nerve damage in my lip and chin from wisdom tooth removal with general anesthesia, and only had a 1% risk of it happening. Knowing this, they have told me I'm not a good candidate for an epidural.

If my platelets hadn't risen by the time of birth, I would have been put to sleep for my c-sections. I saw a hematologist during both my pregnancies but after giving birth my platelets became normal again. It only happens to me during pregnancy.

The only reasons I've heard of are preexistimg nerve issues and low platelets. I had to be cleared by an anesthesiologist beforehand due to a disc issue in my back, but I was eligible.

I'm not allowed one because of a bleeding disorder - the risk is too high of bleeding into the spine. If I have a csection then I'm only allowed to have general anesthetic.

I believe some spine issues (if something is fused) can make epidural problematic and/or impossible.

My dr said sometimes a large lower back tattoo can prevent you from getting an epidural, depending on the hospital and anesthesiologist

Any chronic, unresolved kidney issues may prevent you from having one.

@MrsKRB: @Torchwood: I can't have epidurals because I had a spinal fusion to correct scoliosis. My rod is in just the place they need it not to be
