Are your potty trained boys using the potty on their own now? If so, are they wearing elastic waist pants for easy pull on/off or can they button their pants themselves? LO wears mostly jeans to school but the teacher said he has trouble using the potty by himself because its hard to get his pants off. I guess I should get him some more elastic waist pants but they're usually not cute.

I've taught kindergarten a lot and clothes that promote independence are definitely best. It is typical in a day to have a kid need help with a pant button though, so no need to go break the bank on a new wardrobe, but something to consider for other people buying clothes for this age. At the same time, how will they learn to do that button if they don't have button pants?

our daycare is super hands on so they don't mind that we send him to school in jeans/cords. but yes i suppose wearing sweatpants all the time would be a great way to teach independent potty using. right now charlie always tells us when he has to go, even if he's just running around in his underwear and can go by himself. but when he's wearing pants he asks us to take them off for him.

@cvbee: you are right, we do need to teach him to learn how to button his pants so I will mix in some elastic waist pants to make it a little easier on some days.

@Mrs. Bee: just in the last couple of weeks, he's been wanting to use the potty all by himself. I think it's because his school encourages them to go on their own. He even makes us close the bathroom door now. I just go in to help him wipe after a number 2. And, well, to help with his pants. He gets super frustrated when he does try to button himself. So, now I feel bad after the teacher mentioned it to us yesterday.

Not a boy, but DD's pants all have elastic around the back so she doesn't need to even mess with the button. She can just pull them/down just like other elastic-waister pants. Maybe you can find your DS some jeans like that?

We always send our son to daycare in elastic waist pants. You're right...they're not as cute but if it helps him get potty trained easier (and makes the daycare teacher's life easier), I'm willing to sacrifice style for function for a few months.

We have some jeans that just have an elastic waist around the back. That might be a good compromise. I think I bought them at Kohl's last year.
