Anyway, we might be in the market for a new car in the spring. And our next vehicle HAS to be fuel efficient. We currently have a Xterra and it is just a gas guzzler.
Preferably a family car (open to mini and love the Odyssey or Sienna!). Needs to fit two car seats plus sit another adult in the back.
Completely open to hybrid.
If you don't mind sharing how much you paid, which model and when?
Eta: must have AWD or 4WD!

We were going to go for the Prius V but because of the amount of trunk space and wanting to fit 2 car seats in (not yet though!), we are opting for a Honda CR-V. We already have one, and it's not bad on gas considering the size and alternatives.

A good hybrid would be the Prius V. My friend can fit two car seats in the back for her babies, 16ish months apart. There's space for someone in the middle... it's tight, but do-able. Her car seats are pretty narrow, from what I recall. She fits the City Select double in the back trunk just fine.

Although I love my odyssey, it is not a fuel efficient car (obviously 
). I have a friend who loves her Subaru and she has four kids. She also has a Nissan minivan now too though.

We are a 2 Subaru Outback family and LOVE them. I average 30ish in the summer and 26ish in the winter (hilly and snowy). The AWD is fantastic and they are very safe cars. I am not sure if you could fit 2 car seats and an adult in the back though.

2 car seat plus adult comfortable is a pretty important requirements bc we drive to visit my family a lot. So I need to have the option to sit in the back with them when they're younger. Or just be able to fit my mom when she comes visit and be comfortable when we road trip back to NYC with her.

Love my CRV too, but I will say it's a tight fit for an adult with two child seats in the back.

We love our Toyota Highlander. The third row seat is so helpful and everything fits nicely inside of the car, but the car isn't so huge that it's hard to park and it's easy to drive. They get around 20-23 mpg but the hybrid gets around 28-31.

We just got a Prius v five. We like it so far! It's comparable to the size of a compact SUV. It would probably be a tight squeeze for 2 car seats and an adult but definitely doable.

We love our subaru outback! We got it used but the current year (a dealer rental with 7K miles) and walked out the door at $26K

I like our Toyota Venza. It is a a great car, we could easily fit two car seats plus an adult in the back, but the trunk space isn't huge.

@locavore_mama: is your current car paid off? If so, it's the best value for your dollar, in my opinion. Gas guzzler or not. I did some research into used Outbacks and Prius' and they're pretty pricey vehicles. The CR-V is a really good car that keeps it's value well, which means it's not easy to find a used one for a good deal.

DH might have to in 6 months switch to a store that's 30 minutes away which is why we are looking into a fuel efficient car. Our car is almost paid off. It is horrible with gas. HORRIBLE. And I hate it, it's so not a good family or kid friendly car!
Good tip on the CR-V! That would have been one of my next research step.
Our gas in NY State is much higher! And don't forget we drive 6-7 hours to visit my family a few times a year too!
And oh the plan is to have me driving by Spring so we would need a second car especially if he's working 30 minutes in the opposite direction of my job.

I have a Ford Edge, 2013, AWD, and it gets 21 - 22 mpg. Ugh.
It *could* fit 2 car seats and an adult in the back, but it would be a little cozy for sure!
