We love our Summer Infant Pop n Play! It's portable, folds up like a camping chair (pretty much as small), and you can buy a separate half canopy to use it outdoors. We're even planning to take it to the beach with us in a few weeks to contain our 12 month old.

We got a North States Superyard and it worked really well, though we only used it for like 8 months so I wish we'd chosen a less pricey version (it comes in plastic, metal, and wood versions and we got the wood one). The basic kit is pretty small but with the 2-panel extension, it's a good size for a pre-walker/early toddler. If you decide to get one, check Craigslist -- I saw several plastic and metal ones there for pretty cheap but DH wanted wood.
ETA: we set it on top of one of those foam ABC mats made up of interlocking squares because we have wood floors, so the playpen would slide around a bit otherwise, and also so it was a softer surface for DD. Worked great.

We had the same one as @PurplePeony: and it worked well for a while- not a super long time so I agree that's it's better to go cheaper. Bought it used on Craigslist but it had been stored in a basement or something and was a pain to clean all the little nooks. But I liked that we could adjust the shape a little to make it fit in the area we used it in. We also put it on the foam play mat, to protect the baby and our floors.

We got this one from babies r us and love it. We were going to get the North States Superyard, but my friend's kid started climbing theirs. There's no way to climb the one we got,and we are using it on top of an interlocking ABC mat in our living room.

Following. ... my guy is obsessed with pulling up and standing and just started really crawling. So he needs to be contained but I'm scared he will try to climb anything we get...

@peachykeen: @T.H.O.U.: Is it still good for babies that pull up to try and stand? I'd love to get something so portable, but my son is pulling up on everything and it doesn't look like it's the sturdiest! I'd love your feedback on that! Sorry to threadjack, @snowjewelz: !

@ChiCalGoBee: it's fine for us! Definitely not roping over.

@ChiCalGoBee: DD has been pulling up for some time now, but hasn't actually tried to climb over yet. I would say that it's extremely sturdy (she likes to "shake" the bars and they barely move). They can push against the mesh the way you would in a pack & play, but the bars keep the actual structure from moving. She is almost 29" tall at 12 months, and the top of the side hits her about mid-face, so I don't think she'll be climbing out for a while... (I hope!)

@ChiCalGoBee: Someone local is selling this + extensions, so I'm gonna go take a look -
I have friends that use this and they all loved it. I just didn't want to shell out so much for a brand new one!
