One option is just to wait! DD turned 3 two months ago as well, and it was finally on her third birthday that she was willing to go on the potty (she could hold it literally all day before). She had one day of accidents. Day 2 she was totally potty trained and has only had 1 accident since then. I was so worried she'd never do it, and feeling really stressed, but it was the easiest potty training ever once she decided it was time.

I haven't successfully potty trained yet, but my mom said she always had to turn the sink on and let my sister bring a book to get distracted enough to pee?

@Ms. RV: poor kid- it must be so freaky I guess. You’ve tried bribing her with candy or something, I assume?

I would think that if she can hold it so long, once she gets over the hurdle of actually peeing in the potty, she will be fully potty trained really quickly. It’s just getting her to see that it’s ok.

My daughter could hold it waaay too well when we were attempting to potty train too. Her longest stretch was from overnight until 4pm the next day, all while drinking plenty of water. It was crazy. And she was clearly uncomfortable, which was unsettling for me too. She was that fixed on having control over it though, and just would not pee on the potty. We backed off of potty training for a while (went back to pull ups) and once it clicked for her and she came to the idea of using the bathroom more on her own, she took to it SO quickly and we’ve had maybe just one or two accidents.

She’s all through potty training now (hallelujah!) but we still have some times where she’ll insist she doesn’t need to pee at bedtime or before leaving the house. Hearing running water in the sink often does the trick for her now, until she figured out that we turn it on to get her to go (and heaven forbid I have any role in this!!). So I stuck a cat water bowl fountain thing we have in the bathroom so there’s just water running in general, and that seems to help her without her totally realizing it.

Good luck!! I hope your daughter comes around soon. It’s so tough when you know they CAN use the bathroom, and yet it’s still not clicking yet.

Oh man. This sounds so much like my daughter. Potty training with her was very unconventional. She could hold it forever, and then when it got to be unbearable she would go ballistic. I started putting the diaper on her nd making her sit on the potty with the diaper on to pee/poo. Once she went, the diaper came off and undies back on. We did this for 6 weeks. After a few weeks I would just put it on really loosely with only one tab done up so she could start to feel less secure. No pressure, no shame over the 6 weeks, but just a gentle reminder every so often that if she can do this, she can go without a diaper too. Then when we reached the end of the diapers I told her I wasn’t going to buy anymore. I made a reward chart with 5 boxes and let her pick which reward went in each box and told her we were going to stay home until we filled the box. Box #5 was going to the park. It took 36 hours for her to get to the park, and we haven’t looked back since. She was 3y 4m by the time she was finally trained. Good luck!
