We did not use a RNP, but I can say with some confidence that getting something that plugs in would be preferable to batteries! That said, it sounds like this comes down to whether baby will prefer vibration or rocking. We had a bouncy seat and a swing, and I know my LO did better with the swinging/rocking motion than with the vibrating.

I just talked to my friend about this. My 15 week old is still sleeping in the vibrating RNP. I did not get the rocking one because I thought it would be really hard to wean a baby if they are being constantly rocked- I've also heard it's loud- like hard for parents to sleep loud.

So if you are going to use it bedside I would get the standard version. I rock her in it to soothe her back to sleep sometimes. That said- it depends on your baby. All kids like different things.

I want to just chime in and saw we had the regular RnP (back then, the rocking one didn't exist) but we never ever used the vibrate feature. We tried it a few times and it did nothing for my LO so we stopped bothering to turn it on.

We have the automatic one. It has two settings for rocking: 30 minutes and 6 hours. We'll wean him off the rocking eventually. It's been nice so far. We had one with E that didn't rock automatically. The rocking is nice, loud, but doesn't stop me from sleeping. I wake up to J, not the RNP.

We had the vibrating one that didn't automatically rock, and it was perfect for us. On hard surfaces it kind of rocks itself (it's very lightweight so when my son would move he'd kind of rock himself-neat feature!). The vibrating feature was a life saver-we probably had that on all night each night for the first 7-8 weeks. Our son wasn't big into the swing so I don't know that the auto rocking feature would have added anything, but maybe it would have. Either way, RNPs are awesome!

We received the deluxe Snugapuppy RnP that vibrates, no automatic rocker, at our baby shower. Our DS slept in that starting at just a few days old, but we were spending a lot of time rocking him in it, both when putting him down for bedtime and in the middle of the night after nursing. We discovered the automatic RnPs, and we actually ordered just the rocking unit from Fisher-Price and my husband drilled holes in our regular RnP and attached the unit (we didn't want to buy an entirely new RnP and he's always DIYing things ). We LOVED it because then it would rock him for us and we could just hop right back in bed. We usually just used the 30-minute setting, it was long enough to settle him back to sleep. We had to wean him off the rocking around 10 weeks old, but that wasn't too bad.
