Are we living in 2022????? What a scary and sad time to be living in the U.S.

@winter_wonder: As a Canadian while this does not have a direct impact on my life it makes me so sad for all my US friends and colleagues.

@winter_wonder: it is completely insane. Women will die, lives will be ruined, miscarriages will (and are already being) investigated as murders and those of us who live in liberal states should trust Republicans when they say that the next goal is a national ban.

I also read (on the internet, but from a credible source) that doctors in WI were advised yesterday to stop providing IVF services in preparation for a fetal personhood bill.

@karenbme: I read a similar article after the leak of a draft opinion that there may well be significant repercussions for IVF especially in states where the laws specify that life begins at fertilization.

@karenbme @mrswin: I keep typing, deleting, and retyping replies. I just have no words. It is profoundly sad. I hope everyone uses their outrage to vote in November.

So much is at stake right now beyond the right to make our own medical decisions. Without action we will lose the right to contraception and so many LGBTQ+ rights. Clarence Thomas didn’t mention overturning interracial marriage, but other politicians have and it’s based on the same legal precedent.
If you are enraged like I am and want resources for action, here is a good compilation of local abortion funds: bit.ly/RoeWYCD
@emilyinyourphone has really good scripts for calling your representatives to take action that way (and that is useful whether your state allows abortion or not!)
And I live in a blue state that is committed to the right to abortion, so there is a push to put it into the state constitution to make it harder to undo. I will be pressuring my local reps to do that. We can’t sit back and wait to see what happens. We know what will happen. And we have to be in it for the long haul. There are no quick solutions here unfortunately.
Stepping off my soapbox now. I’m just so angry and scared.
ETA: And we also have to continue working to actively dismantle white supremacy because it is very closely tied to the push to eliminate these protections.

@Aria: , also Clarence Thomas would never overturn interracial marriage because he is in one and it’s clear that this Supreme Court is happy to bend “textualism” to mean whatever they, personally, want. Hand guns are newer than abortion and certainly weren’t around or considered when the second amendment was written, which were the arguments against abortion rights, but the court ruled we can’t regulate hand guns so 🤦♀️

I keep thinking about replying to this thread but I just feel defeated! Ever since the Uvalde shooting I just feel like I don't have the words to express my despair for this country. I am generally not one to get bogged down by the state of the world but man, things have been tough lately.

@LadyDi: I'm with you, it's been so hard lately. I have to stop myself from thinking too far into the future and what life will be like for my girls in the future.
