Probably not the saddest song EVER, but "After the Bombs" by The Decemberists always gets me for some reason...

I don't know how you feel about country music, but this song gets me every time. It definitely helps that Vince's voice is so beautiful and haunting. I saw him sing this in person once and it was just stunningly heartbreaking.

Somewhere Out There from An American Tail ... I was traumatized by that movie because Fievel and his parents get separated. Whenever my dad used to play that song on the piano it would bring back the memories of the movie and I'd start to cry.

@char54: i wonder how many people from our generation are traumatized by that movie. Myself included

@char54: I was so traumatized by that movie as well!

I can't think of any right now.

Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday always made me pretty sad.

ETA: It seems like country is the winning genre for depressing music! LOL

    @grizz: Ugh yes, Damien Rice!

The one that gets me every single time is Gravity by Sara Bareilles. Mostly because of this dance from So You Think You Can Dance... it came on at a time when someone close to me was struggling with addiction and it just broke my heart. (skip to 1:12 for just the song)

@char54: @hotchildinthecity: that song is sooo sad but so sweet! I love it. I wasn't traumatized by the movie, though haha

I forgot one - "To Where You Are" by Josh Groban... It's a sad song, and even more so because it was played at my cousin's funeral. I play it on piano and for the year after his funeral, my dad wouldn't let me play it because it affected him so much.

There's an old Korean music video that's incredibly sad. A student recommended it years ago. A guy is singing it (he doesn't have many songs, but has a really nice voice). I have to find it!

It's the one with them hanging off the cliff in the end, then a helicopter comes. It's from a 3-part series (I think). I may be called "hello" / "goodbye".

    Someone has to know it!!!

@MsLipGloss: That Willie Nelson song is my parents wedding song lol! They didn't have a song picked and thats the one the band chose to play for them! My mom says through all the years (they've been married over 30) and stuff they've been through, it's not a bad song to be attached to.

Mad World by Gary Jules (the version from Donnie Darko)

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
    Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
    No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
    No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kinda funny
    I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
    When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world mad world
