I'm pregnant with LO2 and will be having a repeat c-section. I wanted to know from any ladies who have schedule a c-section, how far in advance do you schedule it? Also how early will they do the c-section? Just curious to know how this all works.

They won't do it before 39 weeks. I scheduled mine at my 37 week appointment when DS was measuring really huge. It was my first. But I have a friend who is having a repeat c section in March and she already has the date for hers, so I think it depends.

@bubblegum: I scheduled mine at 16 weeks which I thought was crazy early! The earliest they would do it was 39 weeks
I think mine was 39+2

The earliest they do is 39 weeks (unless there are other circumstances). I scheduled mine around 30 weeks with DS2 and it was for 39+3. I'm 20 weeks now and expecting the same timeline this time.

@thepicklemonster: Got ya!! I had the same issue with DS we actually ended up inducing and then realizing after all that, that he was too big and I needed a c-section. Good to know though.
@Mamaof2: That's super early!! lol I'm 23 weeks and haven't scheduled it yet but will bring it up at my next appt because I would loveeee to know if he would be willing to do a Friday morning so I can be home by Monday. Did your doctor only let you pick the days he was working in the hospital or....?

@lilteacherbee: hey April mama!! Okay sweet I'm hoping I can do it at 39 weeks too. But with Easter I'm not sure.
squash / 13208 posts
@bubblegum: No, I could pick any day (the OB office has you see a different doctor every time you get checked) I really hit it off with Dr F so I asked her what days she was scheduled to be at the hospital so she could deliver

@bubblegum: They gave me a couple
different options and I chose a Tuesday because one of my favorite doctors would be the one doing the surgery (I go to a large practice with 10 OBs). Hopefully, the holiday won't affect scheduling too much!

@Mamaof2: I met all the doctors in my office towards the end of my first pregnancy and would be fine with any of them expect one. lol But would LOVE if my doctor could do it. My scar is amazing all thanks to him!

@lilteacherbee: Oh sweet! Yes I want my actual doctor to do the surgery if possible. Fingers crossed the holiday won't throw anything off.

I just scheduled mine yesterday and I'm 32 weeks! She only does surgeries on certain days and not past 40 weeks, so I had to do it on a Tuesday. So, I'll be 39 weeks, 5 days.
As luck would have it, I will be having this baby on Valentines Day! I actually was hoping for the week after to give me more time to wrap up stuff at work, but no dice.

My OB won't do a scheduled c-section before 40 weeks unless there is a medical reason. I didn't schedule mine until I was almost 40 weeks; she gave me the option of a scheduled C or a planned induction and (for a number of reasons) I chose the c-section.
I could have scheduled my section for any day of the week, but because I only wanted *my* OB to do it, we worked with her hospital schedule.
My section was scheduled for the morning but ended up getting pushed back until about 6pm due to emergency deliveries/sections, which I think happens fairly often.
I know with my friend who had a repeat c-section, they scheduled hers pretty early in the pregnancy. Good luck!

@NorthStar: Awwww a valentine's day baby How sweet!!! And SOON! Good luck mama

@yoursilverlining: Yeah I have no choice due to my pelvis size. I would only want my OB to do it too butttttt I'll settle for someone else if it keeps me out hospital during the week. Thank you!!

@bubblegum: We picked a date when I was about 37 weeks. They scheduled it at 39 weeks +.

@bubblegum: Thank you!
I wanted my csection early in the week so that DD can still go to daycare or preschool during the day (she is 4.5). We don't have any local family, so it just makes our life a million times easier keeping her routine in place while I am in the hospital.

@Mrsbells: Oh awesome!
@NorthStar: I can completely understand. I'm hoping for a Friday so DH doesn't have to use his time off in the hospital with me. I want him to save that time for when we're finally home.

My friend's RCS was scheduled after she learned the sex. She knew the baby's birthdate for months.
My doctor started talking about scheduling a cesarean on my 38/39 week visit. My cesarean was delayed for a few hours due to more pressing deliveries.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Interesting. No was your scheduled c-section a repeat or first time? I'm hoping I can schedule soon. It would be so much easier to have a game plan set with DS.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
@bubblegum: mine was a first time. Now, my friend had an emergency cesarean and was completely under with her first. She always knew she wanted to do a RCS and this time had more of a non-eventful/ better experience. I'm sure you can always ask to set a date.
ETA: edited orig post too. She had her second son & everything went well. He is a doll, just like big bro!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Omg that's a little scary! I'm glad your friend is going to have a better experience this time around.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: That's part of the reason I'm doing a repeat as well! I went through 2 days of labor, ended up with a csection and don't remember holding DD the first time, nor several hours after. I want to be sure that I can remember those moments this time.

I scheduled mine super early. Mine was scheduled for 38 weeks due to AMA and GD. One week prior my date got moved. I went from 8am Monday to 10am Tuesday. I was no longer the first surgery and was deleted further.

My first RCS was 39w4d we scheduled it around 20 weeks because it was between Christmas and New Years.
My second RCS was at 38w4d. We scheduled that one around 25 weeks.

My repeat csection was tentatively scheduled around 26 weeks. However, it wasn't confirmed until the week of, and I did end up having to change days as the hospital didn't end up being able to accommodate me on the original date - I got bumped up two days earlier. I didn't mind. I delivered at 39 weeks exactly. I don't think you can deliver before then without any other medical reasons.
Good luck!

I can't remember when I scheduled it, maybe 30ish weeks. I had GD so we did it at 39 weeks. Most hospitals do t allow before that unless its an emergency.

@MamaG: Aww man I hope that change did mess up your plans too bad.
@oliviaoblivia: Perfect so it won't be to crazy if I ask about scheduling soon.

We scheduled mine at my 16 week appointment for 38w5d (Dr. would only do it on the day of the week she was the attending). DS ended up coming 5 weeks early though so another doctor performed it.

I forget when we scheduled, but my first was 38+5 and my second was 38+4.

I had my routine RCS for LO 2 at 39 weeks. I had some complications and had a RCS at 36 weeks for lo 3.

Hi April mama!
I had 2 scheduled csections. My doc won't schedule them until around 28 weeks, and 39 weeks (and not a day sooner) is the earliest they will schedule it to happen. Insurance apparently won't cover it before that (unless it's an actual emergency).
DS1 made it to his scheduled date (which was 39w on the dot). DS2 did NOT make it to his schedule (because they couldn't schedule me until 39w6d), and he was born 38w6d....the hospital literally tried to send me home because of insurance.
I'm praying I can be scheduled for exactly 39w this time.....which happens to be my mom's birthday

Thanks for sharing ladies. I'll be seeing my doctor next week so I'll ask him then what's the game plan.
@ValentineMommy: awww fingers crossed you get in there for 39 weeks exactly!
cantaloupe / 6131 posts
@bubblegum: they scheduled mine at 36 weeks because the OR schedule opened up 3 weeks in advance. My HMO only does them from 39w and beyond so I scheduled for exactly 39 weeks (my husband was graduating from business school on my due date so I needed to get the baby out and discharged at home or he would have skipped his graduation!)

I scheduled one for my second, but delivered earlier than planned and had a vbac. But, I was allowed to schedule maybe a month ahead and they wouldn't let me do any earlier than 39w. I got my way and delivered when I hoped I would 8 days before my due date.
