"There was a farmer had a dog and Bingo was his name-o"
Or
"There was a dog his name was Bingo, Bingo was his name-o"
DH and I apparently grew up singing this different ways, and I didn't realize there were variations!

'There was a farmer who had a dog.' But I've also heard 'Old MacDonald had a dog and...'

Definitely #1. Wikipedia agrees: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bingo_%28folk_song%29
@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: Old MacDonald has his own song. He needs to clear out of Bingo's! (But he is a farmer who had a dog.)

Sounds like the second one was made up by a parent desperately trying to sing to a grumpy kid and couldnt remember a good nursery rhyme ive done my fair share of that haha :

It was always "man who had a dog" not farmer, but that second version is definitely not right. I agree with @Mrs. Lion's assessment!

@lovehoneybee: so the poll is unanimous... Who's right in your house?

@honeybear: I totally agree, I just found it interesting. Here I was, reading an email and suddenly "Old MacDonald had a dog and Bingo was his name-o." I did a head tilt. I figured it was a regional thing?

@Mrs. Lion: Yes, this! My daughter will forever be singing the wrong lyrics to her future children

@oliviaoblivia: oh totally me! I cringe a little when D sings it! I wasn't sure if it was just regional thing or just a him thing

@lovehoneybee: my daughter has learned the last letter of the alphabet as "zed" it makes me die a little inside every time she sings it.

That's funny, I opened this thread as my son is listening to this song! I've never heard it without the farmer!

My mother taught us a totally incorrect version of patty cake. It makes my husband laugh when I sing/play it with DD!
