Maybe some man made it up so that he could get laid one last time.

One of the comments on the article says that it's obvious that men started that rumor. lol

@chopsuey119: I am both laughing and crying about the subject

This isn't really accurate though. Large amounts of women in the study had inductions, and the average pregnancy lasted 39 weeks.
Natural induction methods like sex only work if the baby is already ready to come out - so having sex at 35-38 weeks may make no difference at all.
It's actually the semen more than anything that works to soften the cervix - and when you have a hospital induction using prostoglandins? That's make from pig and bull semen.

@Arden: whoa! Really? I remember my doctor telling me semen would cause intense BH's contractions.

It is clear to me that Dr. Tan Peng Chiong is male judging from the fact that he used "perhaps even fun" in this quote from which I can only infer that this person has never been pregnant.
"It would have been nice for couples to have something safe, effective and perhaps even fun that they could use themselves to help go into labor a little earlier if (they) wanted."

@Arden: grossssss...
@HeatherlovesKenny: weird... I got the BH from orgasms not actual sex!!
my midwife always told me that if I happened to go into labor after sex it meant the baby was ready and/or going to come out soon anyway and not to worry about it.

@Arden: EW EW EW. Stop! No more knowledge! I know too much now!
Yeah, I suppose sex wouldn't induce labor if you were trying to induce it too soon...38-39 weeks is just too early for most babies.

Worked here too! (in combination with pretty much every other old wive's tale for inducing labor).
When I was about 38 wks, hubby had put me on unofficial bedrest til he got through a really important meeting at work...as soon as he called me to say it was over, I went for a REALLY long walk, guzzled two cups of red raspberry leaf tea, and that night, went into labor within a half hour of *ahem* the above named activity that evening. Hehe.

I refuse to share this with DH. It is just about the only way I can get him to participate that late in the game:)

@Mrs. Pen: The midwife at the hospital the other day told me that it was the orgasms that cause contractions as well.
