My daughter is 3 and a half weeks old, and just doesn't seem to sleep that much. She sleeps pretty well at night- usually going for 2 or 2 1/2 hour stretches from 10 or so until 9 (but every time she wakes up we are awake for at least 45 minutes because she is a slow nurser / diaper changes / etc).

During the day she just doesn't seem to take long naps unless we really work at it. Last week I could swaddle her and she sleep at least an hour, maybe 2 in her co-sleeper. This week that is not happening. We can get an hour / hour and a half if we lay with her the whole time, and she'll sleep for however long she is in the car seat so if we go for a drive or a walk she's out.

I'm just wondering because the books say she'll sleep like 16 hours a day- I kept track yesterday and it was a relatively "good" day and she only got 12 in. She falls asleep after nursing, but wakes up 15 minutes later and then is just kind of quiet and awake.

I'm okay with her needing to be held & am not trying to put her on a schedule- I just wonder if we should be trying harder to get her to sleep? We just kind of go with the flow about it, and if she's awake she's awake. Should we be actively trying to get her to sleep more?

(obviously I'm a first time mom and have absolutely NO idea what the hell I'm doing!)
