I wouldn't take it personally that you weren't considered - I know at my work new hires are generally expected to stay in the position for which they were hired for at least 6 months to a year before they move on/up in the company.

That being said, if you're not totally happy, there's no harm in looking for something new. Just keep in mind that the grass is always greener on the other side

I know what you mean about feeling guilty, but at the end of the day, the company isn't looking out for you, YOU have to look out for you. People change jobs. It's not like they did anything out of the ordinary for you that you should feel special loyalty to them, right? They are just a decent place to work.

I'm not saying you should leave right away, but if you aren't happy and aren't being compensated as much as you think you should be, I think you should definitely see what is out there. You would still give them appropriate notice if you find something better, and I don't think you owe them more than that.

I agree with PP that you shouldn't take it personal, most companies wont' consider a promotion that quickly and accounting is such a specific field that I can see where a degree would be necessary in their eyes (especially during audit time.)

Having done some work in HR awhile ago it really raised a flag if a person wasn't a job at least a year, or had 3 or more jobs in 5 years, we considered them job hoppers and not worth the investment of training unless a really good interview with good reasoning. Don't take this the wrong way, but if you told me in an interview that you were upset about missing out on a promotion after 4 months of working for a business, I would throw up a red flag for sure.

Doesn't sound personal. Sounds like you haven't been there long enough and don't have all the specifications to move up yet. Also, leaving a job this fast will look poorly on your resume for the next employer.
If you are happy there and are just a little jaded on the current situation I'd stick it out,. Prob better for you in the long run.

You might be able to do better pay wise (although 30K/year without a college degree isn't bad, either), but what about the other benefits? It's close to home, you fit in with everyone (work environment is a biggie)....surely there are some non-direct pay benefits, like healthcare, 401K, anything else to consider?

I would wait it out for awhile so that it looks better on your resume, and personally I'd try to wait until you get your degree--at that point you can either see if your current company will promote you, or you'd be in a really good place to get hired by another one! Plus, you might get paid a higher starting salary if a place hires you with a degree instead of hiring you while you're still working on it.

@MrsBrewer: That sucks! But it'll work out eventually. If it makes you feel better, I have 2 degrees, but I work for a non-profit and make even less than you! Just remember, money can't buy happiness (although admittedly, it can buy lots of fun stuff!)

@MrsBrewer: In that case, you need money!!! Babies, yeah! We both make very little but we have all of our debt paid off, so that's a huge blessing. We were planning to put off babies for a little while longer, but our first is due at the end of Feb!

@MrsBrewer: You can do it!!! Tuition reimbursement seems like a really nice bonus.

Have you talked to them about how you feel? If you haven't, it might be worthwhile to have a conversation and be prepared with your qualifications, contributions you've made, etc....then you maybe you can talk about being considered for a promotion sooner. If a degree is all that stands in the way, then say you want to be considered as soon as you get it. If the company values you and it is a good company, then they will probably be amenable to do things to retain you.

And, don't feel guilty about looking, if you decide to. Everyone wants to move up in the world and make more money, and looking for a new spot is sometimes the best way to do it. Good luck!
