Being a paranoid mom, i never bothered with crib bumpers when setting up the nursery. It didn't matter in the end since she didn't even move when swaddled. LO is almost 7 months and will sometimes bang her head or get arms/legs caught between the railings. Last night she was sitting up in the crib and banged her head when she fell down.
Should i get a crib bumper (despite the fact that they are discouraged) or just accept that LO's head is going to get banged up once in a while?

I am having this same dilemma. LO is almost 7 months old and we never have used a bumper. But he's starting to move around a lot more and woke up last night because he had kicked the rails in his sleep. I am definitely going to get a bumper now!

You can get a breathable bumper. I have one but only use it sometimes because its annoying and overlaps

I have a breathable bumper. However, LO still bangs his head in the crib but I suppose it softens the blow a little.

I put up a bumper when LO was about 6 months old for the same reason - she would wake up crying because she had bonked her head. At the time, she was able to roll herself over so I felt okay about it. I took down the bumper maybe two months later? She was getting really good at standing up in her crib and would start to use the bumper to step up.

@Mrsbells: @T-Mom: I weaved A+A blanket through the part of the crib where she normally gets her legs stuck and it's worked well. Plus, she likes touching it because it's so soft. 
Unfortunately, breathable ones are too thin that they wouldn't soften the blow of a bonk.

We use a regular bumper because LO was getting stuck. You know what sucks? Being woken up at 2am and then having to do the whole bedtime routine just because of a stuck foot. She moves around so much in her sleep that I don't really worry about her anymore.

@caffeinated: yeah you are right, the breathable bumpers are better for preventing stuck limbs in between the slats

@caffeinated: Have you tried putting her in a sleep sack? That solves the problem of legs getting caught in the railings (but not hte head bumping)

We put a bumper up when he was 6 months. He would get his arms and legs stuck in between the slats. Now he likes to sleep with his back pressed up against it. I was worried at first, but after seeing the way he rolls around in his crib I'm not as worried anymore.

@winniebee: Yup, she sleeps in a sleep sack! Lately it's more an issue of her banging her head. She banged her head again...i'm such a bad mom!

@caffeinated: OK so the Happy Healthy Sleep book (blah blah blah) says not to do anything about kids fallng/bumping...and instead they'll just learn not to do it. Not sure if that's helpful though!
