We still don't know what to do for DD1's bed situation after we move DD2 into the crib. DD1 will be between 21-24 months.
So, what does your toddler/2 year old sleep in? Toddler bed, mattress on the floor, twin bed, other?

We are going to move our older daughter into a queen size bed when we move the crib to the new nursery. The queen size bed is currently set up as a guest bed in what will be the new baby's nusery. So we'll just swap all the furniture. That way, when we have company. We can still use the queen bed and just have our daughter stay in our room while the company is in town. A twin bed wouldn't work for guests. We are going to buy bed rails for her.

We chose the toddler bed route and just got one off of Amazon. It's called the Modena by DaVinci.
Since we are buying lots of new stuff (minus the crib and glider) for the new nursery, we didn't want to spend a ton on a bigger bed right now. Plus, DS1 looks so cute in his little bed! He will definitely be in it for a few years. Plus, we could keep using his crib sheets.

@chopsuey: Did you use temporary bed rails? I'm afraid DD1 will be so young she would get hurt.

@ValentineMommy: That toddler bed is so cute and pretty reasonably priced. I may have to look into that even though I'm kind of hoping to find a twin bed option because we already have a twin mattress. I just found this trundle on craigslist http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/carson-trundle/ so thinking that may work.

Crib converted to a toddler bed right now. Our twin bed is set to arrive later this month. We ordered a rail too.

@MrsH: I have bed rails on ds' bed. DD slept on a floor bed til she was 3.5, so she didn't have any issues when we got her a big girl bed. No rails and no falling.

Ours is a twin from Rafa Kids. We didn't use rails, but it's so low to the ground that I didn't feel like we needed to.

He's still in his crib (2.5 years old) but it converts to a toddler bed. It's an ikea snudvik

A little before LO turned 2 we converted his crib into a toddler with the toddler rail. He did well sleeping in there and only fell out once. Around 2.5 years old we transitioned him to a twin floor bed, and he loved the extra space. A year later we got him an Ikea frame for his mattress, and we push it against the wall. He has fallen out once (and didn't even realize it).

We just moved DD from her crib to a twin bed without rails at 27 months. It was practically seamless! She got out once the first night but otherwise has slept normally the last three weeks. No falling out either. It's the PBK Catalina bed. I liked the brightly colored Jenny Linds at LoN but couldn't justify the cost differential. (This one was on sale for half the cost and DH preferred it anyway.)

Latex twin on the floor! It is great. I hope to do a twin with a trundle eventually.

DD is in a toddler bed that my mum gave us. She loves it! She switched at 21 months. She did fall out a couple of times but that is because she slept with her head in the foot spot so the rail wasn't there to catch her. Once we convinced her to sleep the proper way she stopped falling out.

We bought the PB Kids Logan bed on final clearance.
It's not really my taste, but it was literally the cheapest twin bed I could find anywhere. I couldn't even find a twin on craigslist at the time.
