My son was home sick Mon-Thurs last week, attended Friday and this morning they sent him home from preschool with a fever. This is the THIRD time this month he's been sick and missing school.
How long did it take for your little one to get past all those constant illnesses after starting school or daycare?

She's 17 months old and still gets sick every month or so. Especially in the winter. And then, she gets us sick! Fun!

Last year DS went to Kindergarten and was sick all year round. This year, he's doing much better.

omg +1/save me. I have been sick a month. DD has been in daycare for 5-6w now and I am more sick than she is....! Whenever this ends? I will be in heaven.

Ugh, I hear ya. G has been in daycare for... 12 weeks now? She's been sick about every other week. It sucks!

Xander was six pretty much all the time (and so was I *cry*) for about 3-4 months straight! He's 8 months now (and started daycare at 12 weeks) and I just realized we both haven't been sick for a couple weeks, so maybe we're we're over the worst of it??

I think the first 5 months, we were in and out of the doctors office with one thing or another...the majority of it wasn't day care related, though (asthmatic symptoms, ear infections as a result of fluid not draining from his ears).

Our pediatrician told us this when we started daycare at 16 weeks - the first year in daycare expect him to be sick every two weeks, especially during the winter. The next year expect him to be sick every three weeks. The third winter is when he should be ok an only get sick once a month.
This is our second winter in daycare and so far it has been true! I'm not sure if it applies to those starting later though.

LO has only been in daycare a few days so far (we do it casually), and each time she has come back with either a cough or a runny nose. Not too mention learning how to pick her nose mmmm. I keep telling myself it is good for her in so many ways (immunity, social, etc).

My LO has only spent 3 half days in daycare during the last two weeks . . . today may be her first full day of November!

@KT326: I heard that as well! A bit different, but essentially my doctor said that daycare kids usually have 2 really rough winters, and then their immune system is solid! It still sounds like SO far away...

This is such a depressing thread!! But thanks for the honesty.
Seems like I should expect the whole year to be tough on him and consequently on our one-year-old, my husband, myself, the nanny and pretty much anyone else we breathe on.
I guess I am glad he is in his relaxed little neighborhood Montessori this year and hopefully will start next year at his K-12 where attendance is a little more important....

By the way does anyone recommend anything to boost his (or all of our) immune system? Someone mentioned elderberry syrup? Not sure if I can find that here but I might just look....
He already takes vitamins and eats pretty well....

@mamimami: Yes elderberry at the first signs of a cold, they sell at our safeway in the pharmacy. Also I drink a cup of apple cider vinegar a day, and my husband and son take absorbic acid at the first signs of a cold about 3 times a day.
I wonder if this is true for preschool kids as well, my memory doesn't go back to when my son was going. He had a lot ear infections I recall.

My oldest two were sick for pretty much the first 6 months every couple of weeks. I've been pretty lucky with LO though she has hardly been sick at all, I think she missed one day so far (she started daycare at 5 months and is now 10.5 months). Hopefully your little one will get through this phase quickly:)
