My son (3.75) starts PreK next week
I have a silly question about packing his lunch. We have this yumbox:

Do I put an ice pack with it? It can’t fit inside but I could do an ice pack in a soft side lunch box with enough room for the yumbox and his water bottle. But ... will it make it cold/go through the hard plastic??
Is this question making sense?

Not a silly question! I use a PackIt freezable lunch box for my oldest (starts K tomorrow - we used it last year for pre-K too) and keep it in the freezer overnight. I just stick her Bentgo inside in the morning and it stays cold literally all day long. It folds up small when empty so doesn't take up much room in the freezer.

We use an ice pack for H’s planetbox and it stays at a good temp! We only put it in if he has food to be heated though. We don’t if we just pack him a sandwich and fruit, etc

We use packit also, works well for yumbox. So I assume ice pack would do the same

I looked into the packit but went traditional with a soft lunch box and ice packs. DD’s lunch was at 1:05 (out of the fridge at 8am) and it kept it cold enough for me to feel safe sending turkey sandwiches.

I do that with the Bentgo (also plastic) and it’s fine. I put one flat ice pack on the bottom since that’s where the food is. And sometimes one on the top.
The Packit is amazing! I love it. But my son is at an age where he asks for specific things like a Batman lunchbox so no more Packit for us -
We have a similar lunch box and do what you suggested - just put an ice pack in a soft sided lunch box (we need it anyway, though, because we have to pack morning and afternoon snacks as well as lunch). It works fine.

@wrkbrk: the question is where does the lunch go between drop off and lunch time? Our day care/pre k has a fridge for each group so the lunch stays cold. But our elementary only has fridges in about half the rooms. If you have a fridge then you don’t have to worry about ice.

If I don't need DD's water bottle to fit I put DD's yumbox in her LL Bean lunch box with thin ice packs. But most of the time we use the Packit because it can fit the regular yumbox, a water bottle, and the snack size yumbox. Then everything stays cold and contained.

@catgirl: Thats exactly what we have haha. Same soft lunch bag and same yum box!
