T needs all new summer clothing. He's been wearing 5T tops all winter and I think that he would be fine to wear short sleeve 5T tops as well this summer. What's the difference between 5T and 5 though? Also is size 5 the same as XS in the boys dept (versus 5T in the toddler section)? So confusing!

Depends on where you are shopping. Sometimes an XS might be SMALLER than a 5T b/c it is actually a size 4/5 (this is the case with Target brands. I think Gymboree's Boys/Girls size XS is a 3-4, and is pretty little. Tea Collection's toddler sizes are DEFINITELY a lot shorter than their kids' department counterparts 5 vs 5T).
I do have girls, but can't imagine that boys sizes are too different. When I line up the same item in a size 5 vs a 5T from the same brand (I've done this with Carters), the 5 is both longer (by at least an inch) and narrower than the 5T.

I found that with Gap sizing, 5T was slightly smaller than XS boys for tops. I don't think it's helpful to compare between brands though, since there's so much variation.

We're currently struggling with this and it seems like sizing is all over the place. DS is currently growing out of his 4T clothes (generally Carters and ON stuff). I had bought DS some size 5 Oshkosh shorts (assuming they'd be the next step up) and they were so big they were falling off of him. We were on vacation and stopped at Target to get him a couple that actually fit and again their 5 was huge. But the 5T fit fine.
We had to have him actually try on stuff for the first time ever because we just weren't sure.

I don't know for all brands but what I've noticed is they seem to be bigger - wider and longer. For Carter's and Gap we have some 4t and 4's and the 4 is much larger. Even bigger than 5t that we have in other brands.

At Target, for example the XS in boys is sized 4-5, which is a bit bigger than a 5T.

Yeah, in boys, XS is usually 4-5, S is 6-7, M is 8-10, etc. I would probably compare some XS stuff to the 5T and go for it if the difference isn't too great, giving him a bit more growing room.

I have a girl, but fwiw, 5t has been smaller/narrower than 5. Dd wears a 4 or a 5t, or a "4/5." In some brands like Target that is a XS, but in others like Tea that is a S.

Oh, but also, Tea seems to run really big, as does HA. But we like Cat and Jack and Gymboree for sizing.
