We are going to start looking for a house to buy soon - yay! There are a lot of Cape Cod style homes in the areas we are looking, so they have two bedrooms upstairs and one bedroom downstairs. We are hopeful for a second LO relatively soon, so we aren't sure how to configure the bedrooms. If you have a similar situation, how did you do it? LOs upstairs and master down… LOs sharing upstairs and master up, too…
Tell me about your bedrooms… who sleeps where… and how does that work for you?

Our master is in the loft and LOs bedroom is on the main floor. He stayed in our room until 6 months or so but now he's downstairs it's fine but semi-annoying to climb the stairs multiple times a night. He just started pulling up so I got a video monitor so I could see him and determine of he needs me before going downsrairs

@jetsa: Thanks! The video monitor is a good idea!! I am just thinking about multiplying the number of check in times a night by two and getting really nervous about the idea. Unfortunately having everyone on one floor would rule out so many home choices!

My master is on the first floor and the nursery is on the second. It isn't ideal, but I like it better than the reverse for sure. I would feel really uncomfortable sleeping above him, if something were to enter the house or if he got up and "escaped" his crib he would have access to more things like the kitchen and outdoors. It was annoying when he was up multiple times a night, but now he basically sleeps through the night so the stairs aren't as annoying. I think you learn to adapt, it isn't THAT big of a deal. When they are older the additional privacy will be nice too!

We are looking at a similar floor plan and plan to have the kiddos upstairs - with a bed in the nursery in case there are nights I just want to stay close.

@septca: That is a good idea - a bed in the nursery! We kept LO#1 with us for the first few months anyhow, so we wouldn't need to go up and down right away with the next LO.

Our master is on the first floor and all other bedrooms are on the second floor. LO slept in a PNP in our room for the first 3.5 months. I climb the stairs often in the MOTN (unfortunately), so I'm used to it now and it doesn't bother me. When she's older LO will basically have the upstairs to herself and I think she'll love having her own space.

we are on the main floor and LO is on the second floor. For the first couple of months she slept in our room but now that she is STTN it isn't a big deal that she sleeps upstairs.

@lawbee11: That is a good point… later on it will be fun for the kids to have their own floor. And it will be nice to have the first floor all to ourselves once they go to bed. It really is just going from the pack'n'play stage to STTN that will be some extra work.

Our master is upstairs and the other two bedrooms are downstairs. We didn't have kids when we purchased and it never crossed our minds that we would be on different floors. I regret it! If it was flipped, I wouldn't mind so much, but I'm super paranoid, and couldn't deal with all the scenarios that played through my head of what could happen during the night, even with a video monitor. In the end, DH and I moved downstairs into the other bedroom and turned upstairs into an awesome playroom. We have a large enclosed porch attached to our room downstairs that we will turn into part of our room for LO #2 when he/she comes along, and hope to move to our forever house soon after.

Right now we're on a different floor from DS and I pretty much hate it. I'm not sure how old your LO(s) are or if you're dealing with MOTN wake ups. We still have one wake up and it just kills me to have to go up and down the stairs for him. Somehow the stairs make me much more awake and I can't fall back to sleep as easily after I feed him. I know you're looking in the relative area that I live in (and am buying a new house in) and I see tons of 3 bedrooms for sale that aren't capes. But maybe it depends on the particular town you're looking at.

We currently have one LO so he's upstairs and we're sleeping in the other room upstairs. But when baby #2 comes along (or probably before then even), we'll move downstairs and have both LOs upstairs. With video monitors, I'm not too concerned!
We also have a futon in the office (also upstairs), so if I need to sleep up there for some reason, I can.

We are in an upstairs master and LO is downstairs. I was really nervous about it but it has been fine. Luckily he pretty much always sleeps through the night. A good monitor is critical!

@ShootingStar: I'm not so worried about my 1 year old since she STTN, but we are hoping to have another LO soon so I'm thinking about how that might work with a littler one. I'd also be the type who would be totally awake by the time I had to go back downstairs again. There are definitely a lot of different types of houses out there, I just see a lot of Capes that catch my eye, too! Who knows what we'll end up with
@Adira: If we do end up with 2 beds up, 1 down, I think I would do the same thing you are doing. And we would definitely have to set up the video monitor!
