You can always sell them and it's money for the diapers you want.

That was really nice of her to buy them all for you. I would be annoyed that she didn't buy the ones you told and showed her you wanted. Can you return or exchange them?

It actually seems like a pretty nice and thoughtful gesture (and I'm certain she thinks of it as such). Perhaps you can wait and see what she actually ordered - probably with some of the brand you actually wanted? And see how many she ordered? It might be good to have a small variety in case your chosen one doesn't work out, or at least you'll have spares for outings and stuff?
I haven't researched cloth diapers yet, but my friend w/twins used them and I remember she was very vocal about how costly they were and only having a very limited quantity of them.
P.S. I totally understand and sympathize though about pretending to get stuff you don't like. Good thing is that usually the giver never even has to know if you used/kept the gifts or not.

i understand the frustration (i don't know why people bother to ask and then get you the opposite of what you asked for!) but i think she thought she was doing something nice for you. no one has to give a gift and i always keep that in mind when i get something random and try to be thankful that they are thinking of me!

@tororojo I know the prefolds can be handy to use as doublers and/or inserts in Flip covers if that is helpful at all

that is definitely nice, and she was probably totally confused as to all the options (when we were considering CD, any adult we told was like oh! the white fold ones!).

I can't remember - how much are the econobum prefolds? prefolds are FANTASTIC burp cloths. A package of six lesser quality Gerber burp clothes are I think ~$12. If it's comparable, just think of it as now not having to buy burp cloths. If the econobums are a LOT more..maybe give it a week or two and then try to talk to her about it, in a casual way. "Oh, I was checking out this website and found X diaper that I love! I need to order some.." or something similar and see if you can slip in exchanging them?

That's a really nice gift. I totally understand that you may think you don't want prefolds but having some extras for back ups isn't a bad thing. Plus the first thing anyone will tell you about cloth diapering is to not buy too many of one kind until you know what works.

I get where you're coming from..... we use aio diapers only and I love the convenience of them. I didn't want anything else either! If my mil gave me other diapers I would probably keep them because hey were a gift, I wouldn't want to offend her, and id put them out when she's babysitting so she could use them. And you can still go buy the rest of what you want.

I would feel the same way despite her good intentions. I would probably have DH say something to her so that things like this don't continue when baby is there. I think being a new mom will be hard enough without the subtle, I-know-better-than-you type criticism from her.
