Nanny Cams . . . Yea or Nay?

I'd have cameras. I'd probably tell the nanny we had them, but not disclose too much where they are/their range. We'd probably put one everywhere anyway (except bathrooms), they're not too expensive.

I would have cameras. I would disclose their existence, although I probably wouldn't go into too much detail about where exactly they are positioned. I think so long as the nanny is aware that cameras are potentially set up all around the house, there aren't S issues as to any possible privacy issues. I would probably place them all around the house except of course the bathroom/master.

So we have cameras all over our house, we do not have a nanny.

We use them for security and to watch the packages that get delivered to our front door. We don't have any cameras in the bedrooms at the moment, but I am curious why people wouldn't put them in the master...would you lock that room?

We don't, but I did ask during our nanny interviews if they would be comfortable with us having one, and I hired one who said "Of course! I have nothing to hide." That was the right answer. (We trust her for many reasons though)

@looch: Yeah DH and I plan on putting cameras inside and outside our home when we move to a new house just for security sake too. I'd put one in my master as long as I could assure it was secure (like, not on a network that is easily hackable... but that shouldn't be a problem for us!)

I am in full support of nanny cams but I also believe in full disclosure. If it were me I would tell the nanny I had cameras in every room but the bathroom even if I didn't!

Yay - our entire apartment is under surveillance. I check on the live stream at work a few times a day and review the recorded footage at night if our nanny tells me LO had a bad day. Although I agree a nanny has no expectation of privacy, I think full disclosure is the best policy. I disclosed the there would be cameras present during the interview process so anyone that wasn't comfortable could bow out.

@pui: yeah, my husband is pretty good with security, so that's not a concern. I've actually set up a camera in the kitchen and watched my crockpot, I love Foscams, lol. I think we have at least 5.

I meant for those with nanny cams, if you exclude the master, do you lock that room?

I'm fine with nanny cams, but definitely feel like disclosure is important! If the shoe were on the other foot, I would want to know that I was being recorded...

I had more to say originally, but everything I wanted to say was already covered above!

Definitely in favor of nanny cams with disclosure. For years my company car had a GPS device. Even though I WAH I have no expectation of privacy.

We don't have one, but our nanny knows that I can (and will!) drop in without notice, as will my husband, and we do so often.

As a former nanny, I'm pretty neutral. My last employer said that they didn't have them because they didn't want to hire someone that they felt they had to check in on. I get that, you're not going to hire someone untrustworthy. On another note, as a mom, you can never really be sure. Also, with my last family, the dad worked from home about 50% of the time so I never knew if he would be there & when & the video monitor in LO'S room could be logged on to via computer or their phones so if we were in her room they could see us & if we weren't they could still hear us. I think things like that factor in as well.

As a former nanny, I felt more trusted when my employers didn't have cams. I think I would feel really uptight all the time if I worked in a home that had them.

That being said, as a parent, I would probably have them. At least one, in the main living/play space. *I* know I'm a good nanny, but how can I be 100% sure of that about someone else?
    I would absolutely disclose, though.

We have two (one in the living room and one in LO's bedroom) and told our nanny about them. She was totally fine with it, and in fact will call me sometimes if LO is in a particularly cute outfit and tell me to tune in to the living room camera.

For me the main reason to have them is to be able to see LO during the day - it's really nice to be able to catch a live feed of my napping boy, or to see him playing in the living room.

I am in favor of them, but I would ABSOLUTELY let the nanny know.

When I nannied, I always assumed there were cameras even if they weren't disclosed. Still, I would have been upset if I found one and the parents hadn't disclosed that they had them.
